Ontario Premier Doug Ford is ordering the province's public workers back to the office.
Starting point is 00:00:42 It's time to get back to work. It's simple as that. Currently, provincial government employees are mandated to be in their offices at least three days a week. Ford says half of the public service is already working full-time at the office. For remaining employees, that will increase to four days starting this fall. and five days in January. The battle against multiple out-of-control wildfires continues in Newfoundland and Labrador. The largest among them is the Kingston Fire. It's destroyed dozens of homes so far.
Starting point is 00:01:13 Nikola Segan has the latest. I knew it was a tough job. I didn't realize it was going to be this intense. Jason Dyke is one of the volunteer firefighters battling the largest out-of-control fire in Newfoundland on the Beta Verde Peninsula around 150 kilometers from St. John's. The fire has pushed thousands of people from their homes. Premier John Hogan is estimating 100 homes have been destroyed.
Starting point is 00:01:37 But he says the extreme fire and smoke mean officials can't be sure. He's urging evacuees to stay calm as they wait for news. I've asked them to be patient. It's very easy for me to ask that. I'm not the one sleeping in the gym. I'm not the one who doesn't know if my house is still there or not. Police in St. John's have arrested and charged a man in connection with a series of fires started in the city's downtown.
Starting point is 00:02:00 charging him with arson with disregard for human life. He's also facing a $150,000 fine for breaking the fire ban. Nicholas Sagan, CBC News, Halifax. Weather is helping firefighters in British Columbia, dealing with a fire near Port Albany on Vancouver Island. Some neighborhoods are under evacuation alerts, but they are not under an imminent threat. Incident commander, Stefan Hood, says,
Starting point is 00:02:25 winds are dying down, temperatures are dropping, and humidity is on the rise. and he hopes that would help limit the growth of the fire. Hood says Cruz will use that time to construct fire breaks. The United Nations is condemning Israel's plan to go ahead with a proposal for new settlements in the occupied West Bank. Defand de Jarek speaks for the Secretary-General. He says the UN's position is clear.
Starting point is 00:02:48 The Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, go against international law. Settlements to state the obvious further entrenched the occupation, put the prospect of a two-state solution even further away. That is the stated goal of the plan, approved by Israeli far-right finance minister Bezalo Smotrich. If built, the settlement would cut off the West Bank from occupied East Jerusalem. Smotrich says that would bury the idea of a Palestinian state. The announcement follows declarations by Canada and other nations
Starting point is 00:03:24 about their intention to recognize a Palestinian state in September. California's governor is moving forward with a plan to redraw the state's congressional maps. It's an effort to help Democrats win more seats in the U.S. House of Representatives in the 2026 midterms. The initiative is a response to a Republican-led gerrymandering effort in Texas. Steve Futterman has more. Gavin Newsom unveiled his plan. A plan he says is aimed specifically at preventing Donald Trump from, as he puts it, rigging the 2026 elections. Newsom said the proposal in Texas, which is supported by Trump, to redraw the maps there
Starting point is 00:04:04 in order to get more Republicans into the House next year, has to be challenged. I hope we are waking up to this reality. Wake up America. Wake up to what Donald Trump is doing. You have the power to straighten this out. Under the California plan being proposed by Newsom, a special election will take place in November. At that time, voters here will decide whether to read it. draw a California's map. Newsom insisted Democrats must fight back. Taking the so-called high road,
