Starting point is 00:00:26 Certain conditions apply. from cbc news the world is sour i'm neil kumar u.s president donald trump is traveling to alaska for a highly anticipated meeting with russian president vladimir putin it's all in an effort to end the war in ukraine as lisa shing reports both leaders have given indications on what to expect but i am president and he's not going to mess around with me a confident donald trump ahead of a high-stake summit with russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump has tempered expectations, saying the initial meeting could pave the way for a second one that might include Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. I'd like to see it actually happen maybe in Alaska where we just stay, because it's so much easier.
Starting point is 00:01:15 While neither Moscow nor Kiev are willing to compromise on key demands, Putin praising Trump ahead of his trip to Alaska. The current American administration is making energetic and sincere efforts to stop the hostilities, he said. According to European leaders, Trump has promised to leave any negotiations about land to Zelensky. And there could be a joint press conference after the meeting, depending on how it goes. Lisa Sching, CBC News, Washington. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi has ordered the D.C. government to recognize Terry Cole as D.C.'s
Starting point is 00:01:52 a head of the Drug Enforcement Administration. Bondi has also ordered sweeping changes to D.C. police policies, which has drawn immediate legal pushback from the D.C. Mayor and Attorney General. Air Canada is now canceling flights ahead of a potential strike on Saturday thanks to labor dispute. Customers are trying to stay hopeful that a possible strike involving flight attendants won't disrupt their upcoming travel plans. Jamie Strasson is more from Pearson International Airport in Toronto. For Air Canada passengers hoping to get home or take a long-anticipated holiday, a looming job action has turned plans upside down, including this father hoping to get to Newfoundland and Labrador to see his daughter compete in the Canada games.
Starting point is 00:02:33 It's extremely nerve-wracking because we have no clue if we're going to be able to make it. With no deal between Air Canada and its more than 10,000 flight attendants, a strike or lockout could begin early Saturday morning. The airline is already canceling some flights, starting with international long hauls, nerve-wracking for Letitia Halberdell trying to get home from Taipei to write an exam. I'm just really worried that if I don't get back on. time and I can't take this. Like I'm not going to be able to graduate. Air Canada says 500 more flights will be canceled Friday. The airline says customers can change travel plans without a fee and will

As wildfires continue to rage across Newfoundland, there are growing concerns that some of them were deliberately set. Police and St. John's have already charged a 20-year-old man with arson and RCNP are investigating whether the province's largest fire may also have human origins. Karen Pauls explains. Starting point is 00:03:36 until their doorbell video died. They got confirmation soon after. It was destroyed. And what they say is the 12th fire set in their community since May. They're creating fear. People are getting angry. And rightfully so.
Starting point is 00:03:51 To know that someone potentially deliberately did this, it puts it at a different level of grief. They're not the only one saying that. Susan Rose is a counselor for the town of Small Point Broadcove Blackhead Adams Cove. She spent Thursday giving homeowners the news they've been dreading. I don't even know what's saying anymore. RCMP inspector Adam Palmer says the major crimes unit is investigating, asking anyone with
