Starting point is 00:00:46 Canadians the union representing more than 10,000 flight attendants has rejected air canada's request for binding arbitration union president natasha steya says the appropriate course of action is to resume good faith bargaining. We want to get a collective agreement. We don't want to have our rights as Canadians stripped away simply to be forced in a contract. Air Canada insists it still wants to reach a deal, but says the union's demands are unsustainable. The carrier began canceling flights as of yesterday, and 500 more flights are expected to be canceled today. There is more good news and bad news on the wildfires in Newfoundland and Labrador. Evacuees from the town of paradise can return home,
Starting point is 00:01:36 although they'll remain under an evacuation alert and should be prepared to leave again at a moment's notice. Meanwhile, the Kingston wildfire is still growing. It's burned more than 9,000 hectares and an estimated 100 homes. Newfoundland Premier John Hogan. People in Conception Bay North area are starting to receive word from their municipalities and the RCMP about structure loss that are impacting their communities.
Starting point is 00:02:02 So to those who have received that terrible and fortunate news who have lost their homes, our thoughts are with you all. Hogan says firefighters hope to get six water bombers and a heavy capacity helicopter airborne later today as soon as the cloud ceiling lifts. That will allow the aircraft to take off. Fire crews on Vancouver Island are hoping heavy rain in the forecast will help them get a raging fire under control.
Starting point is 00:02:27 The Mount Underwood Fire just, south of the city of Port Albany has been growing in size this week. More than 500 properties in the area are still without power due to the fire. It's a different concern over on the mainland, though. The south coast is under a rainfall warning with up to 80 millimeters expected to fall in just one day, and that could cause flash flooding. U.S. President Donald Trump says he won't be happy if a ceasefire doesn't happen today. The U.S. president is on his way to Alaska to discuss Ukraine's future.
Starting point is 00:02:59 with Russian President Vladimir Putin. But Ukraine's own president was not invited and says that absence speaks louder than words. Lisa Sching reports. It will be very severe. On Air Force One, U.S. President Donald Trump promises consequences for Russia if President Vladimir Putin doesn't stop the war.
Starting point is 00:03:19 I'm not doing this for my health, okay? I don't need it. I'd like to focus on our country, but I'm doing this to save a lot of lives. Trump has long stated his desire to end the war in Ukraine. This summit, he hopes, will be the first step. But neither Ukraine nor Russia have indicated they'll budge on key demands. Moscow wants territorial concessions. Kiev security guarantees. Now, signs there could be agreements on more than just the war.
Starting point is 00:03:47 I noticed he's bringing a lot of business people from Russia, and that's good. Both the White House and Kremlin say there could be a second meeting involving Ukraine if the initial one goes well. Zelensky, who will not be in Alaska, says Russian attacks continue despite the calls for peace. Lisa Xing, CBC News, Washington. A rocket was launched this morning from Cree territory in northern Quebec. In front of jubilant students, the Star Sailor rocket took off. It was built by Concordia University students and members of the local Cree First Nation. It took more than 700 students, more than seven years to build.
Starting point is 00:04:32 They hope their rocket would enter space, past the Karmine line at 100 kilometers above the Earth, but the rocket separated earlier than expected, and that may have stifled its ascent.
