from cbc news the world this hour i'm gina louise phillips we begin with a labor dispute at air canada
as minister of labor i have exercised my authorities to direct the canada industrial relations board
to order the parties to resume and continue their operations and duties labor minister patty highdue
is ordering an end to both the strike by air canada flight attendants and air canada's
lockout of workers. I've also asked the board to assist the parties in reaching a settlement
of the outstanding terms of their collective agreement by imposing final and binding arbitration
and to extend the terms of the existing collective agreement until a new one is determined by
the arbitrator. Heidu says the move is needed to protest the Canadian economy, ensure the delivery
of critical cargo, and ensure stranded Canadians can get back home. The union representing 10,000
flight attendants, QP, says its members receive poverty wages and are expected to put in
unpaid hours of work. The airline has accused the union of being unreasonable. Three major wildfires
continue to burn out of control in Newfoundland and Labrador. On the one hand, better weather is
helping, but at the same time, more evacuation alerts were issued today. Heather Gillis has the
latest. About 150 people in the community of freshwater, just south of the Kingston Fire in
Conception Bay North are now under evacuation alert, as northerly winds could push flames in their
direction. But there was little change in the fire overnight. It's still out of control, estimated at
about 95 kilometers square. Friday's light rain and today's cooler temperatures are helping. Water
bombers were delayed this morning due to low cloud ceilings, but they plan a heavy aerial attack this
afternoon. The fire has destroyed at least 100 homes in buildings, including a school. Today,
officials have been continuing to assess the damage and notify people who have lost their homes.
Meanwhile, evacuees near the Paddy's Pawn fire burning in St. John's returned home last night,
but tens of thousands of people near both fires remain under a state of emergency because the fires still not contained.
Heather Gillis, CBC News, St. John's.
New Brunswick's largest wildfire burning near Miramishie is still out of control.
Natural Resources Minister John Heron said 40 firefighters from Ontario were expected to arrive in the province today,
while 20 from Nova Scotia are returning home to help battle wildfires there.
In Nova Scotia, the municipality of the county of Annapolis has declared a state of local emergency.
More than 100 homes are under evacuation orders as an out-of-control wildfire continues to grow in the Annapolis Valley.
And more people are under evacuation alerts deciding what to take and why.
what not to. It was a little heartbreaking to go through the baby nursery and pick out all the
items that we had just gotten as gifts. A helicopter pilot is also recovering after he was
involved in a crash during firefighting operations. Officials say he was conscious and speaking
when he was rescued. A wildfire continues to burn out of control in the small city of Port
Albany on Vancouver Island. More than 3,400 hectares are burning, despite some relief from some
much-needed rain. Carly DeRosier is with the BC Wildfire Service. So the rain combined with
cooler overnight temperatures has really helped to moderate fire behavior and that's allowing our crews
to get in and work in areas that were previously just too dangerous to access. The remote community
of Bamfield has been without power since Monday because it's too dangerous to send in repairmen.
Access to the main road leading into the community has also been cut off. U.S. President Donald Trump is
back in Washington after a brief summit with the Russian president. Several European leaders
spoke with Trump after the meeting. Italian Prime Minister, Georgia Maloney, says Trump brought
up a proposal for the U.S. and European countries to give Ukraine security support if it's attacked
again. Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, says his country's long-term security must be
guaranteed. And that is your world this hour. Remember, you can listen to our podcast
any time, we update it every hour, seven days a week. For CDC news, I'm Gina Louise Phillips.
