Starting point is 00:00:26 Certain conditions apply. from cbc news the world this hour i'm gina louise phillips we begin with the labor dispute at air canada as minister of labor i have exercised my authorities to direct the canada industrial relations board to order the parties to resume and continue their operations and duties labor minister patty highdew is ordering an end to both the strike by air canada flight attendants and air canada's lockout of workers, and she's imposing binding arbitration to resolve outstanding issues. Haidu says the move is needed to protect the Canadian economy at a time of great uncertainty. The union representing 10,000 flight attendants, QP, specifically rejected Air Canada's call to
Starting point is 00:01:15 submit the dispute to binding arbitration. And critics say Ottawa's repeated decision to impose arbitration has made it impossible for unions to get the employer to bargain seriously. I absolutely reject the notion that our government is anti-union. In fact, under the previous liberal government, we considerably strengthened the Canada Labor Code. We banned the use of replacement workers. QPee says its members receive poverty wages and are expected to put in hours of unpaid work.
Starting point is 00:01:44 The airline has accused the union of being unreasonable. In Newfoundland, people forced to leave their community because of the Paddy's Pond Wildfire are back home today. Although they're still under an evacuation, alert because the fire is still burning. Cooler temperatures are helping, but firefighters are struggling to contain four out-of-control fires across the province. Craig Cody is the director of wildfire management. These fires present serious control problems, as they are virtually impossible to contain until the burning conditions less and greatly. Direct attack is rarely possible,

In Toronto, an 8-year-old boy has died after he was struck by a stray bullet. Police say the boy. was shot while in bed at home just after midnight. Two other apartment units in the building were also struck by gunfire, but no one else was hit.

Russian President Vladimir Putin says his summit with U.S. President Donald Trump was timely and extremely useful, adding he respects the American position on Ukraine. Putin spoke during a televised meeting at the Kremlin today. Meanwhile, Donald Trump is preparing for a meeting with Ukrainian person. President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House on Monday. Julia Chapman has the story. In a long phone call, Donald Trump briefed Volodymyr Zelensky on the Alaska summit. Ukraine's president said he received positive signals on security guarantees, which could involve
Starting point is 00:03:41 the U.S. Several European leaders joined that phone call. They expressed support for Trump in a joint statement. But they added, there should be no limitations on Ukraine's army or its future path to membership of NATO and the European Union. On the streets of Kiev, Ukrainians were underwhelmed. Alena says serious action is needed from Donald Trump to put pressure on Russia. The U.S. President hasn't mentioned new sanctions he had threatened as leverage. Donald Trump appears to have ruled out an immediate ceasefire, saying a peace deal is the best way to end the fighting. He added that a trilateral meeting could be on the cards involving both Zelensky and Putin. Julia Chapman, CBC News, London.

According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center, Aaron is about 170 kilometers northeast of Anguila, with maximum sustained winds of 255 kilometers per hour.
