We begin with the labor dispute at Air Canada.
As Minister of Labor, I have exercised my authorities to direct the Canada Industrial Relations Board
to order the parties to resume and continue their operations and duties.
Labor Minister Patty Heidu is ordering an end to both the strike by Air Canada flight attendants
and Air Canada's lockout of workers.
and she's imposing binding arbitration to resolve outstanding issues.
The union representing 10,000 flight attendants,
QB, specifically rejected Air Canada's call to submit the dispute to binding arbitration.
And critics say Ottawa's repeated decision to impose arbitration
has made it impossible for unions to get the employer to bargain seriously.
I absolutely reject the notion that our government is anti-union.
In fact, under the previous liberal government,
we considerably strengthened the Canada Labor Code.
We banned the use of replacement workers.
QP says its members receive poverty wages
and are expected to put in hours of unpaid work.
The airline has accused the union of being unreasonable.
The start of the school year is only a few weeks away,
but in the Newfoundland community of Conception Bay North,
a wildfire destroyed multiple homes and the school,
leaving families uncertain about what comes next.
Abby Cole reports.
Fortunately, Cabot Academy School in Western Bay has been lost.
That's Education Minister Bernard Davis delivering the staggering news that Cabot Academy is gone, forcing 60 students and 11 staff into alternate schools this September.
It's another blow in a community already struggling with fear and uncertainty.
Hundreds of families are still out of their homes here.
And with back to school coming soon, parent and evacuee Robin Dwyer says she doesn't know what they're going to do with.
the school year starts. As close as the school year is, it's kind of unfortunately on the back burner
right now. In addition to the loss of Cabot Academy, 12 more schools in the region are being used to
support wildfire efforts. But the Education Department isn't anticipating delays in school openings
and is assuring families, students, and staff that everyone in Conception Bay North will have
somewhere to go to school in September. Abbey Cole, CBC News, Carbonier.
Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky will be hoping for a productive meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.
He's heading to the White House on Monday to discuss Trump's summit with the Russian leader.
Ukrainians had hoped Trump would pressure Putin into a ceasefire, but that no longer seems to be the plan.
Lisa Sching reports.
At a church service in Zaporizia, Ukraine, there's disappointment in the outcome of U.S. President Donald Trump's meeting with Russian President Vladimir.
We will keep suffering. Bombs will keep falling on us, says Chaplain Victor Katch. On social media,
Trump changed his message, saying the best way to end the war is to go directly to a peace
agreement, not a mere ceasefire. This morning, European leaders are reiterating any deal must
involve security guarantees for Ukraine. But on Fox News, Trump suggested the country will have to bend.
Russia is a very big power. And they're not.
After his call with Trump, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky continued to call for a real and lasting peace.
Zelensky and potentially some European leaders will meet with Trump in Washington Monday.
Lisa Sching, CBC News, Washington.
In Gaza.
Family members searched through the rubble of a building hit by an Israeli airstrike.
Displaced people were staying in what was a school.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced plans to extend military control over Gaza this week,
suggesting Palestinians should voluntarily leave the territory.
Many world leaders have condemned that plan.
An update on Hurricane Erin, the U.S. National Hurricane Center now expects the now Category 5 storm
to take a turn toward the west-northwest tonight.
It's currently about 285 kilometers northeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Forecasters expect it will begin weakening on Monday.
