from cbc news the world is sour i'm neil kumar the strike by air canada flight attendants lasted only hours before the federal government intervened ordering an end to the strike and air canada's lockout also binding arbitration was imposed on both sides
Ottawa is now facing accusations
that it is favoring employers
over workers. Michelle's song
has more.
Shame on you! Patty Hydeau!
Air Canada flight attendants
picketing at Toronto's Pearson Airport
reacting to word they were being forced
back to work. Federal jobs minister
Patty Heidu invoked section 107
of the Canada Labor Code.
The information that I received from the mediators
is that the parties were still very far apart.
Just yesterday,
QP, the union representing more than 10,000 Air Canada flight attendants
declined the airline's proposal for arbitration.
The process that would have an arbitrator render a decision about specific items
both parties can't agree on.
QP disagrees with the minister.
They say this decision will set a terrible precedent,
and critics worry this will impact workers' rights.
Is your government anti-union?
I absolutely reject the notion that our government is anti-union.
Michelle Song, CBC News,
Toronto. Nova Scotia RCMP are asking the public for help after a series of grass fires were
reported near the town of Oxford. Evidence was found suggesting fires were set intentionally.
RCMP Corporal Troy Kill says it appears some kind of accelerant was used. He says it's unsettling
given they threatened both lives and livelihoods. Cumberland County is a big farmland
community and they rely on whether it be
cattle, sheep, horses as well.
Not only are these people who are setting these fires,
putting people's lives and their homes at risk.
They're also putting the animals at risk as well,
which is very concerning for the RCMP.
Gill says police are looking to speak with witnesses
and anyone who may have footage from the area.
The start of the new school year is just a few weeks away,
but in Newfoundland, in that community of Conception Bay, North,
a wildfire has destroyed multiple homes
and a school there, leaving families uncertain about what comes next.
Abby Cole reports.
Unfortunately, Cabot Academy School in Western Bay has been lost.
That's Education Minister Bernard Davis delivering the staggering news that Cabot Academy is gone,
forcing 60 students and 11 staff into alternate schools this September.
It's another blow in a community already struggling with fear and uncertainty.
Hundreds of families are still out of their homes here,
And with back to school coming soon,
parent and evacuee, Robin Dwyer, says she doesn't know what they're going to do when the school year starts.
As close as the school year is, it's kind of unfortunately on the back burner right now.
In addition to the loss of Cabot Academy, 12 more schools in the region are being used to support wildfire efforts.
But the Education Department isn't anticipating delays in school openings
and is assuring families, students, and staff that everyone in Conception Bay North will have somewhere
to go to school in September. Abi Cole, CBC News, Carbonear.
A slope monitor warning is now in effect for the Ashnola Valley west of Osseuos.
It was prompted by a forecast that predicts heavy rains in the region may lead to rock slides.
Environment Canada is expected between 5 and 10 millimeters by Sunday.
Kimberly Davidson has more.
Automated monitoring of the Ashnola Valley began earlier this year after several rock slides came
down in a row.
The emergency communications coordinator for the lower some milk mean in
band Justin Smith says repeated fires over the past decade or so have compromised the soil on the slopes.
And where the fires burned so hot that certain parts of the soil were literally cooked. So it's not like
normal soil with vegetation that'll soak up water. This will actually make the water run over top of
the soil. The warning advises anyone who sees slope movement should get to a safe spot and call 911 to
report it. The warning will remain in place until at least Sunday at 2 a.m. Kimberly Davidson,
CBC News, Colonna. And that is your world this hour. For CBC News, I'm Neil Kumar.
