Just hours after it started, the air candidate strike and lockout has ended.
But not because the two sides reached an agreement.
Instead, the federal government ordered them back to work and is imposing binding arbitration.
Marina von Stackleberg reports.
I absolutely reject the notion that our government is anti-union.
Jobs Minister Patty Heidu defending her decision to intervene.
less than 12 hours after the Air Canada labor dispute began.
The union says Haidu rewarded Air Canada after it consistently refused to negotiate in good faith.
But the minister says she's stepping in after meeting with both the union and airline late into the night.
She says Air Canada presented another offer, but talks broke down.
It is clear that the parties are not any closer to resolving some of the key issues that remain.
and they will need help with an arbitrator.
Hidu used a section of the Labor Code to order a return to work.
It's the same way Ottawa sent employees back on the job last year
at Ports, Rail and Canada Post.
Unions say that violates their right to strike.

Wildfires in Newfoundland have made life difficult for the organizers of the Canada Games.
Smoke has forced some events to be postponed and others to be moved.
But despite difficulties,
The games and the athletes carry on.
Karen Pulse has more.
At the net, trying to put it away, and they will.
A win and seventh place for Team Nova Scotia's Women's Beach Volleyball team
to finish a chaotic Canada Games competition.
Julia McDougal describes it as a roller coaster.
It was only a bit scary at some points.
Like, we didn't think we were even going to be able to play our games
because, of course, the fires were getting pretty bad.
Beach Volleyball was put on hold last Tuesday after a wildfire prompted
evacuations in this suburb of St. John's. Sierra Sarty is McDougal's teammate and cousin.
We could see flames, flames, flames, so many flames, and that was definitely super, super scary.
With week one overshadowed by wildfires and now Hurricane Aaron heading this way,
organizers are facing challenges. But they say Newfoundlanders and the sports community
are pulling together to keep these Canada games on track.
Karen Paul's, CBC News, Paradise, Newfoundlanders.
A province-wide ATV ban is in place for Newfoundland and Labrador until Sunday night.
Fire Chief Dwayne Antla says ATVs can spark a fire in many ways.
I know people still enjoy doing it, but really it's not much of a sacrifice when you consider
a sacrifice that firefires are making right now on all of these wildfires.
Residents are being advised to carry a fire extinguisher with them at all times.
The Alaska summit between the American and Russian presidents has many European leaders concerned.
They're strategizing ahead of Monday's meeting between Trump and Zelensky,
trying to ensure the U.S. doesn't give in to Russia's demands.
Dominic Volitis has more.
There's no deal until there's a deal.
Ukraine's European allies were watching the Trump-Putin summit closely.
Many expressed disappointment with the optics of the talks,
while others were frustrated there was no announcements regarding a ceasefire.
In a muted joint statement, several European leaders pledged to continue their support for Ukraine and maintain pressure on Russia.
Posting on social media, Trump said all parties believe a peace agreement can end the war without a proceeding ceasefire.
A major policy shift. Natia Seskora is Rusi's Russia expert.
One of his key aims meeting Trump was to gain more time.
And it seems like he has succeeded in that.
Tomorrow, Ukraine's European allies, the so-called Coalition of the Willing,
will convene ahead of President Volodymyr Zelensky's trip to the White House Monday.
Dominic Volaitis for CBC News, London.
And Hurricane Aaron has now formed into a category five storm in the Caribbean.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center says,
Aaron is not expected to make landfall, but it is threatening to dump flooding rains as it grows.
And that is your world this hour for CBS News.
