Starting point is 00:00:30 from cbc news the world this hour i'm gina louise phillips we begin with the labor dispute at air canada the union representing flight attendants say they're going to defy the government's order to return to work yesterday the canadian industrial relations board ordered the union to end its strike and the airline to end its lockout by two p m eastern But CUPY says it's going to challenge that ruling. Here's Wesley Lysoski, president of the Air Canada component of Cupy. We're not willing to accept binding arbitration at this stage. We're here to negotiate a collective agreement.
Starting point is 00:01:10 Something that we can now see was put on hold by Air Canada awaiting this decision. We're just not going to accept it at this time. They didn't address unpaid work or anything else. So they haven't come to the table because this was the plan all along. And we're not willing to accept that. Air Canada had said it would resume flights this evening, but that is now up in the air.

In Newfoundland, an evacuation alert remains in place for Conception Bay North and a new one has been issued for the town of freshwater.
Starting point is 00:01:48 The evacuation alert for Paradise, Conception Bay South, and parts of St. John's was lifted yesterday after temperatures dropped and about 5 millimeters of rain fell. In Nova Scotia, the Long Lake Blaze burning in the Annapolis Valley has grown to 1,100 hectares and is still out of control. About 200 people remain out of their homes, and a local state of emergency has been declared.
Starting point is 00:02:11 In New Brunswick, Lavilet fire has been contained and an evacuation alert in that area has been lifted. Six wildfires remain out of control there, including the old field road fire near Miramishie. An eight-year-old boy in Toronto has died, shot when a stray bullet came through his apartment window and struck him. Javei Roy and his mother were in bed in their home at the time. Marcel Wilson is a family friend and an advocate against gang violence. You have not only destroyed a life of a child and devastated his family, but you've also destroyed your own future.
Starting point is 00:02:46 Every choice has consequences, and this choice has left scars that can never be erased. If you have any humanity left, turn yourselves in immediately. Police have not yet made any arrests. Two other apartment units were hit by stray bullets, but no one else was injured. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has been speaking with European leaders ahead of a meeting with Donald Trump on Monday. The U.S. president will brief them on his summit with the Russian president and what conditions have been put forward in a bid to end the war.
Starting point is 00:03:19 Julia Chapman has the story. When Volodymyr Zelensky travels to Washington tomorrow, he goes with backup. Several European allies and the head of NATO will also attend talks with Donald Trump. They're working to get a more favorable deal for Kiev. After meeting Vladimir Putin, Trump changed his approach, backing a wider peace deal over an immediate ceasefire. Of course, we have to stop the killings. Zelensky is in Brussels for talks with allies about how to approach the White House meeting. Speaking alongside him, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the important thing is that the fighting stops.
Starting point is 00:03:57 She called for a trilateral meeting on that basis. And these decisions cannot be taken without Ukraine at the table. Trump appears to be warming to the idea of security guarantees, suggesting the US could join Europe in a pact to defend Ukraine. Julia Chapman, CBC News, London. A nationwide strike is underway in Israel. Israel in support of the hostages still held in Gaza. Tens of thousands of protesters are demanding the Netanyahu government negotiate a ceasefire and the return of hostages. They worry the government's offensive to take over all of Gaza
Starting point is 00:04:37 will endanger the lives of the hostages still held by Hamas. Many unions, businesses, and municipalities joined the strike, but not the country's largest union.
