Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Zelensky say they both want long-term peace in Ukraine, but a critical White House meeting will hopefully clear up what that peace might entail. Lisa Sching with the latest. It's not to you, to your life. The meeting off to a relaxed and cordial start as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky delivers a letter from Ukraine's first lady to Melania,
Starting point is 00:01:00 Trump after the U.S. First Lady wrote a plea to Russian President Vladimir Putin to protect children and that it's time to end the war. Donald Trump seemingly optimistic about the outcome. We're going to have a lasting peace. I hope it's going to be immediately. The meeting with Zelensky quickly called after Trump met with Putin in Alaska last week, up for discussion, seating territory to Russia and security guarantees for Ukraine. Thank you so much. Seven European and NATO leaders also here to show support British Prime Minister Kirstarmer. We've got to get this right. We've got to make sure there is peace. Putin says Trump is expecting his call after today's meetings. Lisa Xing, CBC News, Washington. Hamas says it is great to the latest proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza. That plan proposed by Egypt and Qatar would see fighting suspended for 60 days. It also includes the exchange of Palestinian-prisoning.
Starting point is 00:01:57 prisoners for half of the Israeli hostages steal in captivity. It's believed Hamas still holds 50 hostages, 20 of them alive. There's no word from Israel yet. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is under pressure from right-wing factions in his government. They oppose any ceasefire that leaves Hamas in power. Air Canada flight attendants are defying a back-to-work order from the federal government. The Canada Industrial Relations Board has ruled their strike illegal. It's ordering the Canadian Union of Public Employees to direct its membership to return to work, keeping national president, Mark Hancock, insists the right to strike is protected by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Starting point is 00:02:35 And real negotiations cannot happen if only one side is banking on the government taking away the rights of another party. And that is what has happened here. Hancock says the union has not heard from Mayor Canada since Friday. This wildfire season has become Canada's set. second worst on record, with about 7.8 million hectares burned so far this year. That's roughly the size of New Brunswick. Eleanor O'Shefsky is emergency management minister. hotter than usual. Temperatures are expected to last really through September across most
Starting point is 00:03:11 of the country, and we're going to expect a continued high risk for wildfires basically through the rest of the summer. Ottawa also announced an investment in wildline firefighting training programs worth half a million dollars. That money will pay for the training of about 100 new firefighters in Saskatchewan in Manitoba. Ontario Premier Doug Ford told Prime Minister Mark Carney, Ottawa must cut red tape for business. He says Canada's best defense against Donald Trump's tariffs is growing its economy. Kate McKenna reports. Prime Minister Mark Carney left a meeting with Premier Doug Ford smiling. The two officials have formed a close relationship since Carney took office earlier.
Starting point is 00:03:53 this year. Ford says he raised making Canada more attractive for business with the Prime Minister. How to make sure that we have the most competitive market in the G7 by making sure that we reduce taxes, get rid of unnecessary regulatory burdens
Starting point is 00:04:09 off the backs of companies. Karnie says the focus was on the Canadian economy. We'll talk about the housing sector. We'll talk about steel, auto, new sectors of the economy, including artificial intelligence, what we're doing in terms of making Canada competitive. Both were asked how trade talks with the United States are going.
