Starting point is 00:00:26 Certain conditions apply. from cbc news the world this hour i'm mike miles jobs minister patty hideu says the federal government is launching an investigation into allegations of unpaid work in the airline sector one of the main grievances of striking air canada flight attendants ten thousand are continuing their job action defying a back-to-work order from ottawa the canada industrial relations board has ruled their strike illegal but q p p p national president mark hancock insists the right to strike is protected by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. And real negotiations cannot happen if only one side is banking on the government taking away the rights of another party. And that is what has happened here. Hancock says the union has not heard from Air Canada since Friday. The Alberta writing of Battle River Crowfoot is holding a federal by-election and Pierre Pauliev's name is on the ballot.
Starting point is 00:01:28 The Conservative Party leader needs a seat in the House of Commons after losing his home riding in April's general election. Polyev is expected to win. Conservative candidates have won this writing with at least 80% support in every election but won over the past quarter century. Federal forestry officials are warning the wildfire season is not likely to end soon. More than 700 wildfires are burning across Canada right now and continuing hot, dry conditions are making things worse. David Thurton has more. Canadians living with the impacts of this year's fire, I know that hearing forecasts of continued fire activity can be daunting.
Starting point is 00:02:05 Julian Morissette with the Northern Forestry Center, warning this year's fire season could stretch into the fall. The outlook where we can forecast with at least some degree of certainty into the end of September is looking like it's going to continue to be warm and dry. Close to 8 million hectares of land have burned this year. In Canada's second worst wildfire season, on record. Most of that in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Climate change is playing an important role. Fire seasons are getting longer.
Starting point is 00:02:34 Officials said it is so dry. The country is seeing fires in places where historically, they were not that common, like Atlantic Canada. David Thornton, CBC News, Ottawa. U.S. President Donald Trump says a deal to end the fighting in Ukraine is attainable and that U.S. security guarantees to ensure lasting peace are on the table. He made the remarks during his meetings with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and several European leaders, including Finland's president. Alexander Stubb says he's optimistic. In the past two weeks, we've probably had more progress in ending this war than we have in the past three and a half years. But there is little progress on the prospect of a ceasefire. Although Trump had previously called for one, he now says
Starting point is 00:03:20 it's not necessary for a peace agreement. And the U.S. President says Zelensky will likely have to seat some territory to Moscow. Ultimately, this is a decision that can only be made by President Zelensky and by the people of Ukraine working also together in agreement with President Putin. Trump says he'll work to organize a trilateral's meeting with Zelensky and Putin. Hamas says it is agreed to the latest proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza. That plan proposed by Egypt and Qatar would seek fighting suspended for 60 days. It also includes the exchange of Palestinian prisoners for half of the Israeli hostages stealing captivity.
Starting point is 00:04:00 It's believed Hamas still holds 50 hostages, 20 of them alive. There's no word from Israel yet. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyu, Prime Minister, is under pressure from right-wing factions in his government. They oppose any ceasefire that leaves Hamas in power. We are done waiting. We have a quorum. Now is the time for action. The Texas legislature is back in session. after its Democratic members
Starting point is 00:04:26 and at their two-week walkout. It was aimed at stalling a Republican effort to redraw the electoral map. The reshaping of congressional districts is done at the behest of President Donald Trump. The goal is to add more Republican seats in the 26 mid-term elections. California has announced plans to retaliate
