Starting point is 00:00:43 CBC News projects he will win the by-election in the riding of Battle River Crowfoot after he lost his longtime Ottawa seat during April's general election. Julia Wong reports. Thank you very much to the great people of Battle River Crowfoot. Pierre Pollyev will soon be back in Parliament after a by-election in rural Alberta. In front of a small crowd, Pollynev said how much he appreciated the people of Battle River Crowfoot. I am grateful that I will have the chance to be their humble servant. Polyev lost his Ottawa riding in April and chose to run in a riding where conservative MPs have always won with more than 70% of the vote.
Starting point is 00:01:22 Polyeve appears to have won handily. David Stewart, a professor emeritus of political science at the University of Calgary, says the results should put to rest questions about Pahlia's future as conservative leader. With this kind of result, I don't think it has any impact, if anything, may be marginally positive. Pollyov will be heading back to Ottawa with a seat in the house and as leader of the official opposition. Julia Wong, CBC News, Camrose, Alberta. Plans are in the works for a meeting between Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin. It comes after a summit at the White House with U.S. President
Starting point is 00:02:00 Donald Trump and Zelensky. Cameron McIntosh has reaction from Washington. Ukraine will never stop on the way to peace. Outside the White House, Ukrainian President Vlodomir Zelensky saying he's ready to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin. And we're ready for any kind of format, but on the level of leaders. U.S. President Donald Trump says he's setting up a meeting. After Zelensky and European leaders spent the day at the White House discussing plans to have Europe provide post-war security for Ukraine with U.S. support. Trump says Russia wants to keep the Ukrainian territory it occupies.
Starting point is 00:02:36 An early sign of how daunting this may be, Ukraine and Europe want to negotiate under a ceasefire. Russia is refusing. Let's try to put pressure on Russia. German Chancellor Friedrich Mers insisting a fair deal can't be reached while fighting continues. The credibility of this efforts are depending on. At least a ceasefire. Last week, Trump couldn't get a ceasefire from Putin, who was still attacking Ukraine.
Starting point is 00:03:02 Cameron McIntosh, CBC News, Washington. Thousands of Air Canada flight attendants remain on strike. The union representing them says workers plan to stay on picket lines defying a federal back-to-work order. Sarah Mitchell is a stranded-air Canada passenger in Barcelona. It's so frustrating because you can't even get through to a person. It's just an automated system that picks up. You have to listen through a message for about two or three minutes,
Starting point is 00:03:28 and then it automatically hangs up on you every single time. Last night, the Union and Air Canada met with a mediator, but there's no word yet if they made any progress. The federal government says there are more than 700 fires burning in every province and territory. 68 are out of control, including the Kingston fire in Newfoundland. Karen Paul's reports. All day, people stand on this hill between Victoria and Heart
Starting point is 00:03:55 its content Newfoundland, watching plumes of smoke and the flare up of flames on the horizon. It's been actually tear our hair. Max and Lorraine Warren live just outside the evacuation zone. Very stressful. And we don't know when we've got to leave our home. Water bombers scoop up water and dump it on the Kingston fire. Newfoundland's largest at nearly 100 square kilometers. Three thousand people are evacuated. About 14,000 more on evacuation notice. Already, more than 100 homes have been destroyed. As Newfoundlanders grapple with loss, Nova Scotians are holding their breath. The largest wildfire in the Annapolis Valley growing quickly. Ottawa says it's working on a plan to better respond to
