Starting point is 00:00:26 Certain conditions apply. from cbc news it's the world this hour i'm joe cummings the union representing 10,000 striking air Canada flight attendants has reached a tentative contract agreement with the airline it means the strike which began over the weekend is now over and air Canada can begin the process of getting its flights back on schedule marian de main reports this news came in just before 5.30 a.m. Eastern time, Cupy confirming that a tentative deal had been now reached with Air Canada. We know both sides met with the mediator at 7 p.m. Eastern last night. Cupy said in a statement posted on social media this morning that they continued talking until just before 4.30 a.m. Eastern. So what does
Starting point is 00:01:17 that mean? They say the strike is effectively now over. Of course, this deal still has to be ratified by the members. They're advising them to go back to work in the meantime, resume those operations, follow all protocol, as they're being told by Air Canada. As it stood just this morning, even before this news broke, Air Canada was saying that the plan was to resume limited operations by 4 p.m. Eastern time. What this now means, it's unclear, because it will still take some time to ramp up operations. So it's not clear what this will mean time-wise, but big news this morning, they are going back to work. Mary Ann Domaine, CBC News, Toronto. Conservative leader Pierre Pollyov will have a seat in the House of Commons when Parliament
Starting point is 00:01:57 resumes next month. Thank you very much for the great people of Battle River Crowfoot. That is Pollyev's victory speech following yesterday's by-election in the Alberta riding of Battle River Crowfoot. CBC News is predicting he will finish with more than 80% of the vote, and Pollyev will return to the House after losing his home riding in the general election back in April. And it's clear he's prepared to pick up where he left off when it comes to criticizing the Carney government.
Starting point is 00:02:27 Now, they promised recently that things would be different. But under Mr. Carney, and his 157 days in office, they've only gotten worse. There have been many announcements and meetings, many photo ops, and a lot of jazz, but not a lot of results. So with Pollyev back in Stornoway, Parliament will resume September 15th. Members of the so-called Coalition of the Willing are meeting virtually today to discuss the war in Ukraine. They are debriefing their allies, including Canada, on yesterday's talks at the White House. Crystal Gamansing reports. We are ready for a trilateral meeting.
Starting point is 00:03:05 Ukraine's president, Vladimir Zelensky, doesn't know when that meeting could take place with the U.S. President and Russia's Vladimir Putin, but there does appear to be a willingness on all sides. And President Donald Trump said security guarantees by Europe would have American support. But we're going to help them out also. We'll be involved. I'm afraid that I am very skeptical of anything that President Trump said yesterday. Retired General Ben Hodges led U.S. forces in Europe between 2014 and 2017. He says he'd love his skepticism to be proven wrong, but...
Starting point is 00:03:41 The president and his administration, their approach has been doomed from the beginning because they can't even admit that Russia is the aggressor here. That aggression continued overnight and into this morning. Ukraine's Air Force says Russia launched 270. drones and 10 missiles at Ukraine, hitting 16 different locations. Crystal Gamansing, CBC News, London. Three American warships are about to arrive off the coast of Venezuela. They're being deployed as U.S. President Donald Trump threatens to take action
Starting point is 00:04:11 against the Latin American drug cartels. That is, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro denouncing what he says are outlandish threat. by Washington. The U.S. destroyers are due to arrive within the next 36 hours, with the Reuters News Agency reporting that 4,000 sailors and Marines are expected to be deployed to the Caribbean region. Maduro says he's in the process of mobilizing 4 million militia fighters. The Trump administration accuses Maduro of drug trafficking and is offering a $50 million reward for information leading to his arrest. And that is the world this hour. For CBC News,
Starting point is 00:04:55 I'm Joe Cummings.
