The International Criminal Court says it's outraged by the U.S. decision to sanction four of its judges, including one Canadian.
The White House accuses Kimberly Prost of abusing the court's authority after she greenlit an investigation into U.S. personnel during the war in Afghanistan.
Ashley Burke reports.
Kimberly Prost was on a panel of judges who paved the way for prosecutors to investigate potential war crimes in Afghanistan.
An earlier ICC report alleged there was a reasonable basis to believe American forces and CIA officers subjected detainees to interrogation techniques involving torture, cruel treatment, and rape.
The U.S. has blasted the investigation and said it wasn't warranted.
Spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary General Stefan Duzerich is pushing back against Washington sanctions.
Judicial independence is a basic principle that must be respected, and these types of measures undermine the foundation of international justice.
In a statement, the ICC called the sanctions a flagrant attack against the independence of an impartial judicial institution.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is on a trip to Afghanistan.
He's trying to strengthen ties with the Taliban-led government and neighboring Pakistan.
Israel's military says it has begun the first steps of its push into Gaza City.
But some countries and aid groups are condemning the Israeli plan to enter new parts of the territory.
Sasha Petrissik reports.
With Gaza City already emptying, Israel's moving ahead with two.
controversial plans, Palestinians see as attempts to deny them their territories, moves also condemned
by many world leaders. In Gaza, the Israeli military says it's calling up 60,000 reservists,
as it begins what it calls a targeted operation to root out Hamas militants. For Gazans,
Israeli troops are here to destroy the Palestinian people, says Ahmed al-Farra. Meanwhile, the
Israeli government gave the final go-ahead for new Jewish settlements
that would cut off the occupied West Bank from annexed East Jerusalem.
A move far-right cabinet minister Bezal Smotrick says
buries any chance of a Palestinian state.

The Mounties have arrested and charged a Calgary man
in connection with the abduction of a 12-year-old boy.
But police say the abduction followed a vigil.
Agilante planned gone wrong.
The victim and six other boys
had targeted the suspect
in a catch-a-preditor scheme.
Here's Corporal Gina Sleaney.
These children actually
started conversation with the accused
on Snapchat and made
arrangements to meet the suspect
and unfortunately it didn't go as planned.
The child did voluntarily get in the vehicle
with the suspect, but then the suspect drove away.
The suspect was picked up at his home in Calgary,
he's facing charges of kidnapping and sexual interference.
Hurricane Aaron is moving closer to the U.S. eastern seaboard.
It's downgraded to a Category 2 storm, and forecasters don't expect it to make landfall,
but the outer edges of the storm are expected to bring high winds and storm surges to coastal communities.
William Ray is director of the North Carolina Emergency Management.
If you've been asked to evacuate, please do so now.
Now, before conditions deteriorate and roads become impassable,
do not drive around barricades and do not drive through flooded waters.
You cannot judge the depth or speed of floodwaters from inside your vehicle.
Beaches have been closed from Florida to New York State.
Aaron is expected to lash Canada's Atlantic provinces with high winds and rain starting this Friday.
And that is your world this hour.
