Starting point is 00:00:26 Certain conditions apply. from cbc news it's the world this hour i'm joe cummings an appeals court has thrown out the civil fraud penalty imposed on donald trump in his lawsuit accusing him of exaggerating his wealth a panel of five judges in new york's appellate division has ruled that the verdict was quote excessive After finding that Trump engaged in fraud by inflating financial statements that went to lenders and insurers, the judge in that case last year ordered Trump to pay what would have amounted to more than $500 million. The civil fraud case was just one of several legal obstacles for Trump as he campaigned and subsequently won a second term as U.S. president.
Starting point is 00:01:18 Still with news from the U.S. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand is in Washington today, meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The two have spoken before by telephone, but until today, they've never talked face-to-face. The Trump tariff campaign is expected to dominate the agenda with Canada's steel, aluminum, and auto sectors, among those being hit the hardest as the two countries continue to negotiate a new trade deal. Israel says it has launched the initial phase of its military offensive on Gaza City. Israeli troops have already established a foothold on the outskirts as hundreds of Palestinians flee their neighborhoods. Margaret Evans reports.
Starting point is 00:01:57 Israeli strikes in the early hours of the morning. A spokesman for the Israel defense forces says Israeli troops already control the city's outskirts and call-up notices have been issued to 60,000 reservists for an operation expected to begin in earnest in September. The UN Secretary-General Antonio Gutierrez added his voice to those warning of catastrophic implications for Palestinian civilians.
Starting point is 00:02:27 It is vital to avoid the massive deaths and destruction that a military operation against Gaza City would inevitably cause. The Israeli decision, which it says is aimed at rooting out what remains of Hamas and rescuing hostages, has dampened optimism that a 60-day ceasefire might be agreed. Margaret Evans, CBC News, Jerusalem. German police have arrested a Ukrainian citizen suspected of damaging the Nord Stream pipeline system. The underwater pipelines deliver Russian natural gas to Germany,
Starting point is 00:03:03 and they were damaged by a series of explosions three years ago shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine. The suspect was taken into custody in Italy. The Ukrainian government has long denied any involvement in the targeting of the pipelines. Venezuela is in the process of mobilizing its military as U.S. warships. make their way toward the Southern Caribbean. The American vessels have been deployed by the Trump White House, which says it is launching a campaign to bring down the region's
Starting point is 00:03:29 drug cartels. But the Venezuelan government says the real goal is to oust President Nicholas Maduro. Manuel Rueda has more. Venezuela and President Nicolas Maduro is pushing back against the deployment of U.S. warships to the Southern Caribbean. Earlier this week, he announced his government will mobilize all of its reservists
Starting point is 00:03:49 to prepare Venezuela for a possible U.S. attack. No empire is going to touch the sacred soil of Venezuela, he said. U.S. officials have said that three destroyers are on their way to international waters near Venezuela's coast. Another group of three ships carrying a land in force with 4,000 Marines is expected to arrive in the area next week. The Trump administration has accused the Venezuelan leader of being a major drug trafficker. Earlier this week, Press Secretary Caroline Levitt said that the U.S. government It's Maduro to face justice. The Maduro regime is not the legitimate government of Venezuela.
Starting point is 00:04:26 It is a narco-terror cartel. He is a fugitive head of this cartel. Malo Lroeda for CBC News, Bogota. It appears Air Canada is getting back on its feet a little faster than expected. Just three days after the airline's flight attendants ended their strike, Air Canada is saying more than 90% of its domestic and international flights will be taking off on schedule over the next 24 hours. Most industry analysts didn't expect to see these numbers until a lot.
