from cbc news the world this hour i'm neil kumar victims rights advocates are disappointed the crown
in the high profile case of five former rural junior hockey players will not appeal their acquittals
as karen paul's reports a judge found them not guilty in july the crown's decision not to appeal
wasn't unexpected but jesse roger says it's still disappointing they're with anova one of
Ontario's largest women's shelters. The decision not to appeal reinforces the same silence and
dismissal survivors have faced for generations. The complainant, known as EM, testified she had
consensual sex with Michael McLeod. But after he invited his teammates to his hotel room, she
claimed she was forced to perform sex acts without her consent. In her not guilty rulings,
Justice Maria Carasia said she did not find EM's testimony credible or reliable.
Gilbert is a University of Ottawa, a law professor.
A court of appeal cannot disturb credibility findings unless they are patently biased or unfair.
The players remain suspended from all hockey Canada sanctioned events.
They are also currently not eligible to play in the NHL.
Both decisions are under review.

Eric Menendez, one of the two brothers convicted for the 1989 fatal shooting of their parents in Beverly Hills,
has been denied parole by a California Review Board.
The denial by the California Board of Parole hearings
marks a significant development in the decades-long case.
Eric, who is now 54 years old,
has spent more than 30 years behind bars.
A Toronto mother is relieved her children will be flying home today
after Air Canada canceled their return flights.
The two children flew unaccompanied to the Czech Republic
to vacation with their grandparents.
But their flights back home were canceled
because of the strike which left the kids in a lurch.
Musa has more. We got initially like an automatic email from Air Canada saying that their flight
was re-booked on the 27. That's a whole week after Carolina Gorodetsky's 14-year-old son and 11-year-old
daughter were supposed to return from Prague after vacationing with their grandparents.
Gorodetsky's kids were booked to travel on direct flights with Air Canada back to Toronto.
Gorodetsky says when her children's tickets were canceled, she struggled to find flight.
with other airlines.
There's not a lot of companies who, first of all,
agree to take them unaccompanied minors
usually need to travel on a direct flight.
Travel consultant McKenzie McMillan says
it's important parents have a plan B.
Make sure you do your research
before handing your child over to any airline.
Gorodetsky says she's grateful Air Canada
has rebooked her children on flights returning to Toronto today.
But she would like airlines to prioritize rebooking minors.

A B.C. ostrich farm has lost its case to save its birds from a cull order issued by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
The order is made after two ostriches on the farm tested positive for avian flu.
As Jasman-Ranea reports, the case has attracted global tension, including from the Trump administration.
It's devastating. We've made it this far.
After months of legal battles, the federal court of appeal has ruled that a call of about 400 ostriches belonging to Katie Pasitney and her parents can go ahead.
Last year, two of the birds tested positive for avian flu on the farm in a remote part of the BC interior,
prompting the CFIA call order.
Dozens of ostriches died after the outbreak, but hundreds survived.
The farmers believe the herd is now immune to the disease and should not be killed.
We have a recovered flock here that we are shielding from the world of our research.
The case has become an international flashpoint in the management of avian flu,
attracting the attention of prominent members of the Trump administration, including U.S. Secretary of Health, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
The CFIA says it implements disease control measures necessary to protect public health
and minimize the economic impact on Canada's poultry industry.
