Starting point is 00:00:26 Certain conditions apply. from cbc news it's the world this hour i'm joe cummings in the midst of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in gaza a declaration today from the united nations be in no doubt that this is irrefutable testimony it is a famine the gaza famine it is the first official confirmation from the u.n that they're is famine in Gaza. And it says it is a result of ongoing hostilities, frequent displacement, and Israeli aid blockades. Margaret Evans has more. A declaration of famine by the UN's top watchdog on hunger has only rarely been made over the past 25 years in Sudan, Somalia, and twice in South Sudan. And now Gaza City, for an official declaration of famine, 30% of children under
Starting point is 00:01:28 five must be suffering from acute malnutrition and two people dying for every 10,000 of outright starvation. Israel categorically denies the report calling it unfounded propaganda. The UN's Tom Fletcher from the office coordinating humanitarian relief said the report is irrefutable. It is a famine openly promoted by some Israeli leaders as a weapon of war. The famine declaration comes as Israel prepares for a major ground invasion of Gaza City. Margaret Evans, CBC News, Jerusalem. There are reports the FBI is searching the Maryland home of former Trump administration national security advisor John Bolton. It's being suggested the search is part of an investigation into the handling of classified documents.
Starting point is 00:02:19 Bolton served as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and as White House National Security Advisor during Donald Trump's first term. in office. But Bolton has since become a vocal critic of the president repeatedly saying he is unfit for office. Meanwhile, the Trump administration says it's in the process of scrutinizing more than 50 million people currently holding U.S. visas. Among other measures, government officials will be examining police records and social media accounts. Lisa Sching reports. This is a major expansion of the Trump administration's immigration crackdown. It's now reviewing all 50, million visa holders. The so-called continuous vetting by the State Department will allow it to revoke visas, deport people if they find evidence of anything from overstays to criminal
Starting point is 00:03:10 activity. And initially, Trump was focused on illegal migration. This has expanded to include reviews of legal migration, too. Earlier this week, the administration revoked more than 6,000 student visas. It's also put a pause on issuing visas. to commercial truck drivers after a fatal crash in Florida. So this latest announcement means it's not just people who work and study here who could be affected, but some tourists too. Lisa Scheng, CBC News, Washington. The agency says workers in construction, farming, and other physically demanding jobs are at a specifically high risk of heat stroke, dehydration, and cardiovascular damage. One of the authors of the study is saying the Canadian climate swings from extreme cold to extreme heat, so workers are losing their heat adaptation in the winter months.
