In the midst of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, a declaration has been issued today by the United Nations. Be in no doubt that this is irrefutable testimony. It is a famine. The Gaza famine. It's the first official confirmation from the UN that there is famine in Gaza.
Starting point is 00:02:14 And it says it is the result of ongoing hostilities, frequent displacements, and Israeli aid blockades. Margaret Evans has more. A declaration of famine by the UN's top watchdog on hunger has only rarely been made over the past 25 years, in Sudan, Somalia, and twice in South Sudan.
Starting point is 00:02:34 And now Gaza City, for an official declaration of famine, 30% of children under five must be suffering from acute malnutrition, and two people dying for every 10,000 of outright starvation. Israel categorically denies the report calling it unfounded propaganda. The UN's Tom Fletcher from the Office Coordinating Humanitarian Relief said the report is irrefutable. It is a famine openly promoted by some Israeli leaders as a weapon of war. The famine declaration comes as Israel prepares for a major ground invasion of Gaza City. Margaret Evans, CBC News, Jerusalem. In London, bids are being taken until the middle of next month for an auction that is drawing international attention.
Starting point is 00:03:25 It's the Downton Abbey auction, with props and memorabilia from the beloved TV series being offered up to the highest bidder. Crystal Gamansing has more. Defining scenes from Downton Abbey flashed across a large screen in Bonham's auction house. The auction includes more than 200 lots. Some, like a cane used by the late-day Maggie Smith, could fetch 800 pounds. Lady Mary's wedding dress, 3 to 5,000. The famous bell wall, it's already over the expected bid of 7,000 pounds. We always expected there to be an American audience.
Starting point is 00:04:03 Rebecca Anthony is an associate specialist in the pop culture and science department at Bonham. The viewers have surpassed what we expected. There's bidding all around the world. Anthony spins around the room, pointing, smiling, telling tales about every piece. A brush, a hat, a script signed by the cast, pieces of television history. Some proceeds will go to a charity in support of seriously ill children. Crystal Gamanssing, CBC News, London. And that is the World This Hour.
