Starting point is 00:00:30 from cbc news the world this hour i'm gina louise phillips mark carney is calling it a gesture of goodwill as the trade dispute with the united states drags on the prime minister says canada will remove many counter tariffs on american goods dropping the levies on products that are compliant with the kuzma trade agreement u.s president donald trump is reacting positively to the move and the prime minister hopes it will kickstart more negotiations. Rafi Bujicanan has the story. We have the best deal with the United States right now. We have the best deal.
Starting point is 00:01:08 Look at the numbers. Prime Minister Mark Carney defending his conciliatory approach with the U.S. He says the Americans have not imposed tariffs on Canadian goods that comply with the Kuzma trade deal. It has been a complaint of President Donald Trump's administration that Canada was not doing the same until today. We will now match the United States. by removing all of Canada's tariffs on U.S. goods, specifically covered under Kuzma. Tariffs will remain in place on steel, aluminum, and auto products, 25%. That's still just half of what the Americans charge for Canadian goods going to the states in those sectors.
Starting point is 00:01:47 Carney spoke to Trump yesterday the first publicly acknowledged conversation between the two men in weeks. He says the U.S. President assured him this move would unblock negotiations toward a trade deal. Raffa Bucanion, CBC News, Ottawa. Global food security experts confirm there is famine in Gaza City. The UN-backed integrated food security phase classification is calling the situation catastrophic. And it warns it will likely get worse. Sasha Petrissik has the latest. Amid faint cries at Nassar Hospital in southern Gaza, mothers comfort babies, weak from hunger.
Starting point is 00:02:26 Famine has now hit more than half a million. Palestinian. NGOs and UN agencies have been raising the alarm for weeks, but now it's been officially declared by a UN-backed body which specializes in malnutrition. It is a famine that we could have prevented if we had been allowed. The UN's human rights chief, Tom Fletcher. Yet food stacks up at borders because of systematic obstruction by Israel. Israel posted its response online. There is no famine and accused the hunger. monitor of smearing Israel. Experts say the worst hit area is around Gaza City in the north,
Starting point is 00:03:04 the scene of Israel's latest military push to control more of Gaza. But famine, they say, is spreading fast. Sasha Petrissik, CBC News, Toronto. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says that Russia is trying to avoid a meeting between him and Vladimir Putin. Zelensky told a NATO press conference that Russian officials are doing everything they can to prevent the meeting from happening. Russian foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, said today
Starting point is 00:03:32 that the Russian president is ready to meet with Zelensky, but no agenda has been set. Well, in Ontario, family is lucky to be alive after a dramatic early morning rescue. It happened during a house fire northwest of Toronto. It required neighbors to act fast. CBC's Clara Paseka reports. I'm just glad. I'm blessed that they're okay.
Starting point is 00:03:54 The family's okay. Ahmed Chowdry said he was awakened to a loud band. across the street. We heard screaming and screeches in the back. He and his friend hop a fence. And then we see the family of four at the windows. The smoke coming out of the windows. They're like, help me, help us, help us.
Starting point is 00:04:09 So we're trying to look out what we can do. But how would they get them out? Patrick saw a plywood in the neighbors. So he put the plywood against the house. Patrick's like, just jump, jump. So first kid jumped, he grabbed it. I got the second kid come down. The parents made it out as well
Starting point is 00:04:22 and everyone headed across the street moments before another explosion. No one was seriously injured. Abbey Daigle also lives on Arbor Glen. Insane flames, and then there was the initial blast, and then two more. The fire is now out, but the home is leveled. Police say the fire is not suspicious. The office of the Ontario Fire Marshal will investigate the cause. Clara Paseka, CBC News, Georgetown.
