Starting point is 00:00:40 as the trade dispute with the united states drags on the prime minister says canada will remove many counter tariffs on american goods dropping the levies on products that are compliant with the kuzma trade agreement u.s president donald trump is reacting positively to this move and the prime minister hopes it will kickstart more negotiations. Raffi Bujicanian has more. We have the best deal with the United States right now. We have the best deal. Look at the numbers. Prime Minister Mark Carney defending his conciliatory approach with the U.S. He says the Americans have not imposed tariffs on Canadian goods that comply with the Kuzma trade deal. It has been a complaint of President Donald Trump's administration that
Starting point is 00:01:23 Canada was not doing the same until today. We will now match the United States. by removing all of Canada's tariffs on U.S. goods, specifically covered under Kuzma. Tariffs will remain in place on steel, aluminum, and auto products, 25%. That's still just half of what the Americans charge for Canadian goods going to the states in those sectors. Carney spoke to Trump yesterday the first publicly acknowledged conversation between the two men in weeks. He says the U.S. President assured him this move would unblock negotiations toward a trade deal. Rafi Bucucanian, CBC News, Ottawa. Ukraine's president says Russia is doing everything it can
Starting point is 00:02:04 to stop a meeting between him and Vladimir Putin from taking place. Both Kyiv and Washington were optimistic, peace talks were within reach, following a summit between Putin and Donald Trump. But as Dominic Volaitis reports, now the U.S. president isn't so sure. Ukraine's president, Volodymy Zelensky, has repeatedly called for Putin to meet him. On Friday, he accused Russia of not only avoiding
Starting point is 00:02:32 a meeting, but also actively prolonging the war. I think in two weeks we'll know which way I'm going. Now, another deadline from U.S. President Donald Trump, who's already begun making arrangements for a Putin Zelensky meeting. Clearly frustrated at the lack of progress, he once again raised the possibility of punishing Russia. It's going to be a very important decision. And that's whether or not it's massive sanctions or massive tariffs or above, or do we do nothing and say it's your fight. Meanwhile, Russia's foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, has claimed Putin is indeed ready to meet Zelensky, but only when an agenda for such a summit is ready, while blaming Zelensky for saying no to everything. Starting point is 00:03:17 New York State Police say multiple people are dead after a tour bus crashed and rolled on a high The bus was returning to New York City from Niagara Falls. 52 people were on board, including children. The crash happened on a highway east of Buffalo. It still isn't clear what caused the bus to hit a median and veer into the ditch. An Ontario family is lucky to be alive after a dramatic early morning rescue. It happened during a house fire northwest of Toronto that required neighbors to act fast. CBC's Clara Paseka reports.
Starting point is 00:03:53 I'm just glad. I'm blessed that they're okay. The family's okay. Ahmed Chowdhry said he was awakened to a loud bang. Across the street. We heard screaming and screeches in the back. He and his friend hop a fence. And then we see the family of four at the windows. The smoke coming out of the windows. They're like, help me, help us, help us.
Starting point is 00:04:09 So we're trying to look out what we can do. But how would they get them out? Patrick saw a plywood in the neighbors. So he put the plywood against the house. Patrick's like, just jump, jump. So first kid jumped. He grabbed it. I got the sacking kick come down.
Starting point is 00:04:21 The parents made it out as well and everyone headed across the street moments before another explosion. No one was seriously injured. Abby Daigle also lives on Arbor Glen. Insane flames and then there was the initial blast and then two more. The fire is now out but the home is leveled. Police say the fire is not suspicious. The office of the Ontario Fire Marshal will investigate the cause. Clara Paseka, CBC News, Georgetown.
