Starting point is 00:00:42 when he says players don't always need to have their elbows up carney was asked about the sports analogy after announcing he's dropping retaliatory tariffs on many u.s goods it will apply to goods that comply with the kuzma free trade agreement, and it's a bid to kickstart more negotiations with Washington. Carney says Canada is not letting its guard down. And I have played some hockey over the years. And there is a time in a game, in a big game, and this is a big game. When you go hard in the corners, you elbows up, the time in a game, we drop the gloves in the first period and you send a message. And we've done that. But there's also a time in a game where you want the puck, you want to stick handle, you want

The announcement is being applauded by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business. The organization calls it a step in the right direction. It's also being well received by the White House. U.S. President Donald Trump called the move nice and said he hopes to speak with Carney soon. Ashley Burke has more. Starting point is 00:01:49 dropping some countermeasures aimed at the U.S. He's removing his retaliation. which I thought was nice, and we're going to have another call soon. Mark Carney says Trump assured him on their call yesterday that if he ditches these tariffs, trade talks with the U.S. would intensify. This after both countries failed to reach a deal by Trump's August 1st deadline. I'm fighting for the United States, Canada and Mexico, have taken a lot of our business over the years.
Starting point is 00:02:17 Trump says the two countries are working on something, but didn't say what. We want to be very good to Canada. I like Kearney a lot. I think he's a good person. Warm words for a prime minister who just gave something up to try and make sure talks advance and Trump doesn't hit Canada again. Ashley Burke, CBC News, Washington. We're learning more about the investigation
Starting point is 00:02:41 into two young children that have been missing for months in Nova Scotia. Six-year-old Lily Sullivan and her four-year-old brother, Jack, disappeared from their home in May and newly obtained court documents reveal how police were focused on the family. Angela McIver reports. The freshly unsealed documents detail how RCMP combed through bank records, phone data, and GPS information. Investigators wanted to piece together the movements of the children's mother, Malaya Brooks Murray, and stepfather Daniel Martel, in the days leading up to their disappearance.
Starting point is 00:03:16 Martel says he's always been open and transparent with investigators. They know my life inside and out and I was happy to share it with them. It's important for me not just because Jack and Lily were my stepkids and there's two innocent children that are missing. The documents reveal that as of July 16th, investigators did not believe the case was criminal. Six polygraph tests were done, including on both of the caregivers. Brooks Murray was given a polygraph in what RCMP say was an effort to eliminate her as a suspect in causing her children's disappearance and possible murder.
Starting point is 00:03:47 She passed and so did Martel. To date, RCP have received 740 tips and more than 9,300 videos and say a tremendous amount of careful, deliberate, investigative work is ongoing. Angela McIver, CBC News, Halifax. The Canadian racehorse jockey, who famously rode secretariat to the Triple Crown, has died. Ron Turcott was 84. In a statement, Turcotte's family says he died of natural, causes earlier today at his home in Drummond, New Brunswick.
Starting point is 00:04:21 Riding one of the sports most decorated horses, Turcotte won the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and Belmont Stakes in 1973. It was the subject of the 2010 film Secretariat.
