from cbc news the world this hour i'm claude fagg prime minister mark carney has announced that canada will
remove all counter tariffs on goods from the united states by september the first that are currently
covered by the canada u.s mexico agreement however carney says that canada will maintain its
tariffs on steel aluminum and autos as the federal government works with the u.s to craft a new
trading relationship. Olivia Stefanovic has more from Ottawa.
The Prime Minister emerged on a quiet summer day in Ottawa to jolt the country with
major economic news. Canada and the United States have re-established free trade for the vast
majority of our goods. Starting September 1st, Canada will scrap the 25% counter-tariffs
it placed on American goods covered by the North American Free Trade Deal, a gesture in the hopes
it will reset the relationship with the U.S.
Do you have any assurances from the Americans
that this will kickstart negotiations?
Did President Trump specifically say that in his conversation with you?
Yes.
He's removing his retaliatory tariffs, which I thought was nice.
The two leaders discussed the move on Thursday,
their first one-on-one call since blowing past Donald Trump's
August 1st trade deal deadline.

Manitoba's Premier is criticizing Ottawa for dropping the counter tariffs on U.S. goods.
Wab Cano says the latest move caught him by surprise and that he isn't a fan.
Is this elbows down?
I think Canadians want to see a stronger response to Donald Trump.
And we've taken actions as a province to support business,
to take American liquor off the shelves, to repatriate energy.
I'm not sure that taking these steps that the Prime Minister announced is the right move at this time.
Canoe would prefer to see the feds remove duties from Chinese EVs in the hopes that Beijing would lift fees on canola.
Carney says Canada is not letting its guard down and likens the tactic to hockey saying players don't always need to have their elbows up.
While the roads of the Canada summer games involves hard work, talent, and skill.
For two members of Nova Scotia's men's softball team,
it also involved fighting for their lives
to make it to Canada's largest multi-sport event in St. John's.
Elizabeth Chu has more.
19-year-old Ty Campbell steps onto a softball field
at the Canada Games in St. John's.
For the co-captain of Nova Scotia's men's team,
this dream come true almost didn't happen
after a medical emergency in December.
I was diagnosed the brain aneurysm.
I had a stroke.
I'm still not 100% today, but I'm definitely very, very happy.
Where I am, I'm able to play.
The goal, making it to St. John's, is shared by Garth Parenthood.
G, as he's affectionately known by the players,
was the head coach until early May.
He had to give up the job after contracting a dangerous infection
in his spine and arm.
He was recently released from hospital in Halifax,
just in time to root for the team.
Blessed, I guess, to be here.
Nova Scotia is the defending silver medalist.

Lyle Menendez, one of two brothers convicted
for the 1989 fatal shooting of their parents in Beverly Hills,
has been denied parole by a California review board.
Lyle, who is now 57, has spent more than 30 years behind bars.
His brother Eric was denied parole on Thursday.
The FBI carried out raids at the home in office of former Trump administration National Security Advisor John Bolton.
It's being suggested that the search is part of an investigation into the handling of classified ads or classified documents.
But Bolton served during Donald Trump's first term in office.
However, he has since become a vocal critic of the president.
And that is your world this hour.
For CBC News, I'm Claude Fagg.
