Starting point is 00:00:41 which has confirmed famine in parts of gaza the integrated food security phase classification or ipc says nearly a quarter of the people living in gaza are experiencing famine and it predicts that number will rapidly rise without an immediate ceasefire and an end to humanitarian aid restrictions Julia Chapman has more. There is no relief in Gaza City. An Israeli airstrike today sent up a billow of smoke. The city is the center of Gaza's hunger crisis. The IPC, the body that assesses food security around the world, says famine is underway there.
Starting point is 00:01:20 Israel says that's not true and accused the IPC of fabricating its report. It insists that plenty of supplies are reaching Palestinians who need them. But UN agencies describe a trickle of aid and say danger on the ground often prevents distribution. The Israeli government is pressing ahead with plans to occupy Gaza City. It says the operation is key to ending the war and freeing the hostages still held by Hamas. The situation has to end. Donald Trump has backed his ally in Israel, saying a swift defensive could make hostages safer. Julia Chapman, CBC News, London.
Starting point is 00:02:00 Human Rights Watch has accused M23 rebels of killing more than 140 civilians in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The rights group says the killings carried out in July mark one of the worst massacres since the rebels resurfaced in 2021. Chris Ochoamaringa has more from Kinshasa. Heavy fighting between the M23 rebels and government forces has left a trail of death and destruction in the North Kivou. province. A new report by the Human Rights Watch says the M23 rebels killed more than 140 people in 14 villages last month. The rebels have dismissed the report as fabricated. Rwanda has also denied its army's involvement. But locals like Josue Kabanza say the killings were aimed at Huta civilians accused of links to the democratic forces for the liberation of Rwanda.
Starting point is 00:02:55 He says the main victims are members of the Huta community who are being mistaken. Staken for combatants of the FDLR group by the M-23 rebels. The United States helped broker a peace deal between the DRC and Rwanda in June, but fighting continues worsening an already dire humanitarian crisis. Chris Ochamringa for CBC News in Kinshasa. Canada has lost a sports legend. Jockey Ron Turcod, who wrote another sports icon, Secretariat to the most dominant Triple Crown Victory sweep to date in 1970.
Starting point is 00:03:30 has passed away at the age of 84. Among Turcotte's 3,000-plus career wins was this one. Here comes Secretary to the wire, an unbelievable, an amazing performance. He hits the finish, 25 lengths in front. Gallant wave of a hat by Turcotte, and he certainly should be proud of what he and his horse did today, Jackson. Taking Secretariat to the 31-length win more than 50 years ago at the Belmont Stakes. Ironically, Turcotte's career was cut short at Belmont. An accident made him a paraplegic.

Turcott is a member of multiple halls of fames, including the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame, and it was named to the Order of Canada. Ron Turcott died in his hometown of Grand Falls, New Brunswick. He survived by his wife and four children. Canadian golfer Brooke Henderson is in contention on Moving Day at the LPGA CPKC Women's open being played in Ontario. The Smiths Falls, Ontario native sits at five under par, four shots back of the lead. Calgary teenager Aphrodite Deng, who is making her LPGA debut
