There's new reaction today to the Prime Minister's plan to scrap billions of dollars in counter-tariffs on some American goods.
Starting point is 00:01:09 He says the measure is aimed at kick-starting negotiations on a new trade and security deal with the U.S. Matthew Holmes is with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. He says the strategy comes with some risks. So we're seeing opposition parties, we're seeing premiers speak up against this move. And so the prime minister here has taken a calculated risk, I think. But what it means is that it plays into a longer-term discussion around Kuzma, our trade deal with the United States. A review of the free trade agreement between Canada, U.S. and Mexico gets underway next year.
Starting point is 00:01:44 In Northern California, a large wildfire is burning in the state's popular wine country. Officials say it's growing and getting more ferocious. Crews are fighting the picket fire both from the skies and on the ground. The blaze is just west of Sacramento, and it has torched about 16 square kilometers of land near Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Several evacuation alerts and orders have been issued. UK's Reform Party leader says he will deport asylum seekers by the masses if he becomes Britain's Prime Minister. Nigel Farage's pledge comes as the UK is gripped by demonstrations, over immigration policies. Dominic Volaitis has the story.
Starting point is 00:02:31 Just one of several anti-immigration rallies which took place in Britain today. They're protesting against the use of hotels to house asylum seekers, spurred in part by concerns about public safety after some migrants were charged with sexual assault. Refugees are welcome me. Counter-protestors were out in force at the demonstrations at several locations. police had to intervene and separate the opposing crowds. Broader opinion polls show immigration and asylum are now the British public's greatest concern, ahead of the economy. The number of people entering the country illegally via the English Channel has increased when compared to last year. The former Brexit campaigner and leader of the Reform
Starting point is 00:03:18 UK Party, Nigel Farage, is now pledging mass deportations of migrants who've entered the country illegally if his party forms Britain's next government. Dominic Volitus for CBC News, London. Owners of a BC ostrich farm say they're devastated after losing a legal appeal to save the birds. In January, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency ordered a call of the herd of around 400 birds after two tested positive for avian flu. Katie Pasitney is with Universal Ostrich Farm. She says the ruling sets a dangerous precedent.
Starting point is 00:03:54 Farmers like us can't defend our own animals, that we can't test them independently without the threats of jail time, like we've been being threatened, six months in jail if we test our own ostriches. In its decision, the federal appeals court ruled the coal was necessary to control the disease and protect public health. While two Canucks are making a charge at the LPGA's lone Canadian stop, including the pride of Smith Falls, Ontario. Brooke Henderson has won since the opening event. of 2023, but now Brooke at the wrinkle, at the hockey vibe. Henderson is just one shot back of the leaders at round three of the Canadian Women's Open. Henderson has more pro wins than any other Canadian golfer. Keeping pace is 15-year-old Aphrodite Deng.
