Starting point is 00:00:35 I'm Gina Louise Phillips. The Prime Minister is in Ukraine for a surprise visit to mark the nation's independence day and to show Canada's support in its war efforts. Carney joined ceremonies in Kiev. He revealed more details of a military and aid package announced earlier this year worth $2 billion. He also said he is not ruling out plans to put Canadian boots on the ground in Ukraine.
Starting point is 00:01:05 We are working through with our allies and coalition of the willing and with Ukraine, the modalities of those security guarantees on land in the air and the sea, and I would not exclude the presence of troops. Carney will be in Germany Tuesday to meet with the German Chancellor along with business leaders. is also making stops in Poland and Latvia. Carney's trip comes as efforts have ramped up to achieve peace between Ukraine and Russia. Much of it has been brokered by the U.S.,
Starting point is 00:01:40 and there has been talk of a possible summit between the nation's two leaders. But today, Russia's foreign minister says a meeting is not likely anytime soon. Putin is ready to meet with Zelensky. When the agenda would be ready for a summit, and this agenda is not ready at all, How can we meet with a person who is pretending to be a leader?
Starting point is 00:02:05 Sergei Lavrov also rejected Ukraine's bid for NATO membership and blamed Kiev for stalling potential peace talks. Russia, meanwhile, has intensified its attacks on Ukraine, including one of the biggest aerial strikes of the war so far that was carried out on Thursday. Some of Canada's steelmakers are demanding more protections for their industry. The sector faces a 50% U.S. tariff. Last week, Carney lifted counter-leveys on a host of U.S. goods,
Starting point is 00:02:33 but left ones for steel, aluminum, and autos in place. David Fritz is the president of Supreme Steel in Saskatoon. He says Canada can no longer rely on American projects, and we need domestic ones to replace the work. Most of what's been thought of is focused on supply. We need to find a way to increase domestic demand. So I like to see the idea of fast-tracking some of the major projects that are being considered here in Canada, that would certainly help steal fabricators, no doubt.
Starting point is 00:03:04 Carney says he hopes removing the counterteriffs will it reignite talks with the U.S. He says Canada is in a better position than many countries when it comes to American trade. And this afternoon, CBC's cross-country checkup is asking, what grade are you giving Mark Carney on negotiations with Donald Trump? Is the Prime Minister playing it smart, or is he selling Canada short? Join Ian Hannah Mansing on this topic. Checkup airs at 1 p.m. Pacific, 4 p.m. Eastern. Canada's Brooke Henderson is in the hunt for the second Canadian open title of her career. The 27-year-old is tied for first, heading into today's final round.
Starting point is 00:03:44 Ed Clyman tees up the day's excitement. Brooke Henderson, she won that title way out west in Saskatchew. She is the best golfer our country has ever produced. Today, Brooke Henderson is chasing another title on her home turf, the Canadian Open Championship. Can you imagine here in the GTA if she would get it done? In Saturday's third round, the pride of Smith Falls, Ontario had the shot of the tournament on the par four 17th hole. After driving into a Greenside bunker, Henderson holed her second shot for an eagle that bolted her to the top of the leaderboard. Brooke, yes!
Starting point is 00:04:17 I had a really good line in the bunker, and I knew I had to hit high and soft because it was pretty fast, but it was really nice to land it right where I wanted to and see it go in. Among the challengers today will be the surprise of the tournament, 15-year-old Calgary native Aphrodite Deng. Playing in her first tournament, she ended round three tied for seventh, just five shots behind Henderson and Australia's Min G. Lee. Ed Climmon for CBC News, Mississauga, Ontario. And that is the world this hour.
