Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to the dudes club, a brotherhood supporting men's health and wellness. Established in the Vancouver Downtown East Side in 2010, the dudes club is a community-based organization that focuses on indigenous men's health, many of whom are struggling with intergenerational trauma, addiction, poverty, homelessness, and chronic diseases. The aim is to reduce isolation and loneliness, and for the men to regain a sense of pride and purpose in their lives. As a global health care company, Novo Nordisk is dedicated to driving change for a healthy world. It's what we've been doing since 1923.
Starting point is 00:00:38 It also takes the strength and determination of the communities around us, whether it's through disease awareness, fighting stigmas and loneliness, education, or empowering people to become more active. Novo Nordisk is supporting local changemakers because it takes more than medicine to live a healthy life. Leave your armor at the door. Watch this paid content on CBC. GEM. From CBC News, the world is sour.
Starting point is 00:01:06 I'm Neil Kumar. We begin with what could be a major shift in foreign policy for Canada. During a surprise visit to Kiev, the Prime Minister says the door is open for our troops to return to Ukraine. Marie Brewster's traveling with the PM and has this report. We need a cessation of hostilities. We need a ceasefire. We can call it a ceasefire, a truce, and armistice.
Starting point is 00:01:25 Prime Minister Mark Carney in Kiev, laying down the main condition. for Canada reintroducing troops to Ukraine. The structure of security guarantees ease up in the air because nobody knows what conditions would be attached to a possible ceasefire. We are working through with our allies and coalition of the willing and with Ukraine the modalities of those security guarantees
Starting point is 00:01:50 on land in the air and the sea, and I would not exclude the presence of troops. The problem with all of the talk of security guarantees at the moment is that Russia totally rejects the idea, especially the reintroduction of Western troops. It's also unclear how far the U.S. is prepared to go with guarantees should the war restart. Carney says Russia doesn't have a say in Ukraine's future security arrangements. Murray Brewster, CBC News, Warsaw. Peter McKay was Canada's defense minister under Stephen Harper.
Starting point is 00:02:24 He says putting soldiers back in Ukraine is a good idea. This commitment of troops on the ground, I think, is still some way off, way into the future in terms of getting past the critical phase of stopping a shooting hot war, but it shows the level of support that Canada is prepared to bring. Carney did not clarify what role Canadian soldiers could play in Ukraine. They left the country in 2022 following the Russian invasion. They are now helping to train Ukrainian recruits in the UK alongside British forces. The streets of Toronto have been filled with iconic anime, comic book, and movie characters. The Fan Expo was in town over the weekend, drawing thousands of fans into the city to celebrate the convention's 30th year. Mercedes Guestin Bede has more.
Starting point is 00:03:11 If you saw a group of girls dressed as anime characters or a grown man with a pokey ball on the subway this morning, chances are they were headed to Fan Expo. For fans like Eva Peroni, it's like jumping head first into a fictional world. I'm cosling Laura Croft from Rise of the Team Rader. It's one of my favorite video games, and I 3D printed a lot of my items, which is kind of cool. Rows upon rows of action figures and comic books fill the floors. And while some are here to shop, others like Matthew Boys waited in line all day to meet their favorite pop culture icons. Rom Perlman, I mean, he's Hellboy. He's always going to be Hellboy for me.
Starting point is 00:03:44 I was like, I have to meet this guy. I mean, I'm just a big nerd. So I just love all this stuff. Cosplays from every fictional universe are here. It's probably the only place you'll see Neo from The Matrix taking a photo. with Daphne from Scooby-Doo. One thing's for sure, these fans take pop culture very seriously. Mercedes Guest and B-Day, CBC News, Toronto. And closing out on a musical note, Calgary hosts of the National Karaoke Championships this weekend.
Starting point is 00:04:09 More than 100 singers from across the country were competing to represent Team Canada at the World Championships in Bangkok. Terry Trimbath reports. The lyrics might be lighting up a screen, but this is far from a night out at a karaoke club. Sharon Quinn is the National Director for Karaoke World Championships Canada. We start kind of in the karaoke bars early in the season in the springtime, and then we move our way to regional finals and provincial finals and national finals and then our world final, which moves around every year. A panel of judges score competitors in three categories, duets, soloists, and original songs.
Starting point is 00:04:46 They are looking for vocal quality, vocal technique, artistry, and stage presence. Camille Pango is in the final round. despite her lack of experience singing in front of a live audience. My partner, Carl, loves singing, and he sings every Sunday in church. Me, I pretty much exclusively sing in the shower. And, yeah, this is a big step up for me. The winners move on to compete at the World Championships in Bangkok, Thailand, in November. Terry Trembath, CBC News, Calgary.
Starting point is 00:05:15 And that is your world this hour. For CBC News, I'm Neil Kumar. Thank you.
