Starting point is 00:00:30 from cbc news it's the world this hour i'm joe cummings prime minister mark carney is in warsaw today canada saying canada is committed to expanding its trade defense and energy relationship with poland and ahead of his meeting today with polish prime minister donald tusk carney is saying that commitment also includes canada fulfilling its NATO responsibilities. We learn much from the Prime Minister, from his government, including the importance of pulling our full weight in NATO. And it will take us a few years to reach Polish levels of commitment, but it's possible. And we have made that commitment. We will quadruple our spending on defense
Starting point is 00:01:19 between now and the end of the decade. As it stands now, Poland has the defense budget almost 10 times the size of Canada's. Carney and Tusk are rolling out a new strategic partnership that focuses on aviation, cybersecurity, and clean energy. First to Gaza, where the, now to Gaza, where the territory's health ministry says at least 15 people are dead following an airstrike today on Nassar Hospital. That's the sound of airstrikes and gunfire echoing today throughout Gaza City. There are reports the victims of Nassar Hospital at Nassar Hospital were killed in what's known as a double-tap strike.
Starting point is 00:02:02 That's one missile strike followed by another moments after emergency crews arrive on the scene. Israeli defense minister Israel Katz is saying the military campaign currently underway will continue until Gaza City is destroyed. That is, unless Hamas agrees to end the war on Israel's terms and release all remaining hostages. Montreal City Council is scheduled to adapt today its new anti-racism policy. But five community groups working with minorities in the city say there is a key component missing in this policy. Gabina O'Duro explains. It has clearly omitted those two important words which are anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. Farida Mohamed of the Canadian Council of Muslim Women says
Starting point is 00:02:45 Montreal's anti-racism policy doesn't explain how the city intends to address hate and extremism. are not actually naming the problem. And the biggest problem at the moment in Montreal, and as we're in Canada, for that matter, is the hate directed at different communities and a lot of them are religious-based communities. As it stands, the policy focuses on urban safety, cultural, economic, and territorial equity,
Starting point is 00:03:09 and inclusive participation. According to Montreal Police, there's a 6% increase in hate crimes reported between 2023 to 2024, and hate incidents were tripled that at 18%. In a statement, the city of Montreal says it's determined to fight hate crimes head on with the help of the Montreal Police Crime Unit. The five organizations are hoping the city will change the anti-racism policy in time for the City Council meeting later today. Kubino-Duro, CBC News, Montreal.
Starting point is 00:03:37 Canada has a new national guideline on smoking and how smokers can be helped to quit the habit. It offers evidence-based advice that opts for natural medication over e-cigarettes or vaping. Christine Birak has more. Nicotine addiction grips people harder than their regrets. Canada's now launching its first ever national guideline, a push to help people quit smoking. We have some really powerful tools that are accessible. Calgary ER Dr. Eddie Lang led the task force.
Starting point is 00:04:07 The online guide offers a list of proven strategies from counseling and nicotine replacement therapies to medications that work. We asked a doctor about some of those claims. Acupuncture. Doesn't really work very well. Dr. Matthew Stanbrook's a respirologist in Toronto. He says there's little or no evidence for hypnosis,
Starting point is 00:04:26 laser therapy, acupressure, or St. John's Wart to quit smoking. People need to know that their chances are way better if they get help and that there are many options that work. Including a well-studied natural medication called cytosine. It effectively mimics nicotine's effects in the brain, reducing cravings and withdrawal symptoms. New help for a deadly old habit. Christine Beirak, CBC News, Toronto.
