Starting point is 00:00:40 prime minister mark carney is in warsaw saying canada is committed to expanding its trade defense and energy relationship with poland following his meeting today with polish prime minister donald tusk carney says that commitment also includes canada fulfilling its nato responsibilities we learned much from the Prime Minister, from his government, including the importance of pulling our full weight in NATO. And it will take us a few years to reach Polish levels of commitment, but it's possible. And we have made that commitment. We will quadruple our spending on defense between now and the end of the decade. As it stands now, Poland has a defense budget almost
Starting point is 00:01:23 10 times the size of Canada's. Carney and Tusk are also rolling out a new strategic partnership that focuses on aviation, cybersecurity, and clean energy. Carney's overseas tour, which started yesterday in Kiev, will see the Prime Minister fly next to Germany and then to Latvia. Health ministry officials in Gaza are reporting at least 19 people are dead following an airstrike on Nassar Hospital. That's emergency crews on the scene of the aftermath of the strike. It's being reported as many as four journalists are among the fatalities.
Starting point is 00:02:00 Meanwhile, the Israeli military continues with this Gaza City offensive. Defense Minister Israel Katz says the military campaign currently underway will continue until Gaza City is raised. That is, unless Hamas agrees to end the war on Israel's terms and release all the remaining hostages. The French Foreign Ministry has summoned U.S. Ambassador Charles Kushner. It comes after Kushner published an open letter that accuses the government of Emmanuel Macron of not doing enough to combat anti-Sense. Semitism. The foreign ministry is calling the allegation unacceptable. Last month, France announced it will be recognizing Palestinian statehood in the United Nations. Kushner, who is Jewish, says that declaration is fueling anti-Jewish violence and extremism. Kushner's son Jared is married to
Starting point is 00:02:48 Ivanka Trump, the daughter of U.S. President Donald Trump. Air Canada customers affected by the flight attendant strike will be facing a lengthy backlog if they want to lodge a complaint. The Canadian Transportation Agency is saying its backlog of air travel complaints at this point stood at 80,000 as of August 14th, and that was two days before the strike began. While the regulator put in a new system two years ago to ramp up its capacity to deal with concerns, the number of complaints submitted has also increased. Canada has a new national guideline on smoking and how smokers can be helped to quit their habit. It offers evidence-based advice that opts for natural medication over e-cigarettes or

Canada's now launching its first ever national guideline, a push to help people quit smoking. We have some really powerful tools that are... Calgary ER Dr. Eddie Lang led the task force. The online guide offers a list of proven strategies from counseling and nicotine replacement things. therapies to medications that work. We asked a doctor about some of those claims. Acupuncture. Doesn't really work very well.
Starting point is 00:04:02 Dr. Matthew Stanbrook's a respirologist in Toronto. He says there's little or no evidence for hypnosis, laser therapy, acupressure, or St. John's wart to quit smoking. People need to know that their chances are way better if they get help and that there are many options that work. Including a well-studied natural medication called cytosine. It effectively mimics nicotine's effects. in the brain, reducing cravings and withdrawal symptoms.
