Starting point is 00:00:26 Certain conditions apply. from cbc news the world this hour i'm neil hurland the australian government is making a stunning accusation against iran it says iran planned and carried out attacks targeting the jewish community in australia a kosher food company in sydney and a synagogue in melbourne were both set on fire last year no one was injured in those attacks Mike Burgess is head of the Australian spy agency. The Iranian government directed at least two and likely more attacks on Jewish interests in Australia. Our painstaking investigation uncovered and unpicked the links between the alleged crimes and the commanders in Iran's Islamic Revolutionally Guard Corps.
Starting point is 00:01:17 As a result, Australia is expelling the Iranian ambassador from its country. Australia has also evacuated its embassy in Iran, pulling all its diplomats out to a safe third country. The Iranian government has not responded yet to the allegations. The families of Israeli hostages still held in Gaza are holding a series of protest today. They want Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to accept a hostage deal with Hamas. The CBC's Margaret Evans reports from Jerusalem. Demonstrators, pounding drums and holding pictures of the hostages aloft, locked roads and highways in and out of Israeli cities disrupting the morning commute. Dalia Kuzner's brother-in-law, Eitan, is one of 20 hostages still thought to be alive.
Starting point is 00:02:07 We're trying to make the Prime Minister sign this deal, even though we don't think it's the best hostage deal because it's only a partial one. Hamas accepted a deal put forward by mediators last week, based on a temporary ceasefire and an initial release of half the hostages. Despite having previously agreed to staged releases, Benjamin Netanyahu now insists all hostages be released at once. International pressure is building on Netanyahu after the UN's hunger watchdog confirmed famine in Gaza City last week. Marker Evans, CBC News, Jerusalem. Prime Minister Mark Carney is in Germany today and he's shopping for the Canadian Navy. We're in the process of renewing our submarine fleet, one of our most important defense initiatives.
Starting point is 00:03:00 Carney met with German Chancellor Friedrich Mertz this morning, and at a joint news conference he spoke about Canada's plans to buy new submarines. Carney says there are two companies in the running to build Canada's new fleet. One of them is from South Korea and the other contender is a German-Norwegian partnership. Carney will tour their facility later today. A new federal program meant to help low-income Canadians with disabilities is off to a rocky start. Payments for the Canada Disability Benefits started going out in July. But in just the second month, a technical glitch kept many recipients from getting the money on time. Ben Andrews has more.
Starting point is 00:03:41 You've reached the Canada Disability Benefit Call Center. An automated message greets callers. A limited number of client payments remain outstanding. Many wondering what happened. to an August payment that hasn't showed up in their account. John Redens is one of them. He's eligible for money from the Canada Disability Benefit. The program pays up to $200 per month.
Starting point is 00:04:02 Every dollar helps. The House of Commons passed the benefit in 2023. Money started going out this July, but already Redens says his August payment was delayed. He had earmarked the money to cover an expense. For this money not to show up into their account is a huge disappointment. Rabia Khadar is with Advocacy Group Disability with poverty. She says many people were affected by a technical glitch and need reassurances after
Starting point is 00:04:27 the breach and trust. Employment and social development Canada confirmed some payments remain outstanding. It says efforts are underway to issue the remaining money in the next few days. Ben Andrews, CBC News, Ottawa. There's a new development in the growing fight between U.S. President Donald Trump and the U.S. Federal Reserve. Trump says he has fired one of the seven governors on the board of the U.S. Central Bank. And that's the CBC News.
