Starting point is 00:00:39 demonstrations are being held across israel today in what is being called a day of struggle its families and supporters of those being held in gaza demanding an end of the war and the release of the hostages margaret evans reports Demonstrators, pounding drums and holding pictures of the hostages aloft, locked roads and highways in and out of Israeli cities, disrupting the morning commute. Dalia Kuzner's brother-in-law, Eitan, is one of 20 hostages still thought to be alive. We're trying to make the Prime Minister sign this deal, even though we don't think it's the best hostage deal,
Starting point is 00:01:24 because it's only a partial one. Hamas accepted a deal put forward by mediators last week, based on a temporary ceasefire and an initial release of half the hostages. Despite having previously agreed to staged releases, Benjamin Netanyahu now insists all hostages be released at once. International pressure is building on Netanyahu after the UN's hunger watchdog confirmed famine in Gaza City last week. Merger Devon, CBC News, Jerusalem.
Starting point is 00:01:57 The Prime Minister of Australia is accusing Iran of organizing two anti-Semitic attacks on Australian soil. And Anthony Albanese is expelling the Iranian ambassador and cutting diplomatic ties to Tehran. This is the most serious response that any Australian government has given. We don't expel an ambassador lightly, but we do think that it is an appropriate response, given the extraordinary...

Albanyzi says Australian intelligence officials have evidence the Iranian government directed arson attacks last year on a kosher food company in Sydney and on a synagogue in Melbourne. Mark Carney's visit to Europe continues today with the Prime Minister in Germany. And on this stop, submarines are being discussed, specifically a bid by TKMS, a German-Norwegian company to win the contract to build Canada's fleet. Marie Brewster has the details. has been announced that Canada has narrowed the list of contenders to build the Navy's new submarines to two bidders, TKMS and South Korea's Hanwa Ocean. The Prime Minister met with German Chancellor Friedrich Mers and is slated to participate in a business roundtable with the goal
Starting point is 00:03:09 of diversifying Canada's trade and coming up with a critical minerals partnership. However, as with many elements of its European trip this week, defense and security issues are near the top of Carney's agenda. Federal officials speaking on background said the debate. The debate within government now is whether to go the route of requesting proposals or straight into contract negotiations with the preferred bidder. In the high-stakes multi-billion dollar gambit to replace Canada's aging and largely inoperable Victoria-class submarines, the German-designed Norwegian partnered Type 212 CD is perhaps the most well-known and heavily marketed of the contenders. Cabinet is not expected to decide until next year the earliest which way to proceed.

Lisa Cook is one of seven members of the Central Bank's Board of Governors. Trump writes on social media that there is sufficient reason to believe she made false statements on mortgage agreements. It's an allegation that she's denying. The Trump administration has criticized Cook and some of her colleagues for refusing to lower interest rates last month. The attempt to fire Cook is being seen as an escalation of the conflict between the White House and the Federal Reserve. Cook is insisting she will not resign and that Trump has no cause to fire her.
