on his visit today to germany prime minister mark carney has signed a canadian german critical
minerals partnership carney says canada has underdeveloped its criminal critical minerals like
nickel and cobald allowing other countries around the world to dominate the global market
He says Germany is a trailblazer in Europe when it comes to diversifying its markets and moving away from its reliance on China and Russia.
Carney today is also discussing submarines, specifically a bid by a German-Norwegian company, TKMS, to rebuild the Canadian fleet.
Murray Brewster has the details.
It has been announced that Canada has narrowed the list of contenders to build the Navy's new submarines to two bidders,
TKMS, and South Korea's Hanwa Ocean.
The Prime Minister met with German Chancellor Friedrich Mers and is slated to participate
in a business roundtable with the goal of diversifying Canada's trade and coming up with a
critical minerals partnership. However, as with many elements of his European trip this week,
defense and security issues are near the top of Carney's agenda.
Federal officials speaking on background said the debate within government now is whether
to go the route of requesting proposals or,
into contract negotiations with the preferred bidder.
In the high-stakes multi-billion-dollar gambit to replace Canada's aging
and largely inoperable Victoria-class submarines,
the German-designed Norwegian-partnered Type 212 CD
is perhaps the most well-known and heavily marketed of the contenders.
Cabinet is not expected to decide until next year the earliest which way to proceed.

Demonstrations are being held across Israel today
as part of what's being called a day of struggle.
It's one of many demonstrations that are blocking roads and highways in and out of Israeli cities.
It's an effort to pressure Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to sign off on a ceasefire agreement that Hamas has already agreed to.
It involves a release of half the remaining hostages being held in Gaza.
Netanyahu is insisting all hostages be released at once.
U.S. President Donald Trump says he's firing the governor of the Federal Reserve.
Lisa Cook is one of seven members of the Central Bank's Board of Governors,
and Trump is claiming there is sufficient reason to believe she has made false mortgage statements.
It's an allegation that Cook is denying.
Trump administration has been critical of Cook and some of her colleagues for refusing to lower interest rates.
Cook is insisting she will not resign, saying Trump has no cause to remove her from the board.
Vietnam is still being lashed by heavy rank.
and winds in the wake of Typhoon Kajiki.
It hit Central Vietnam yesterday with winds at 130 kilometers an hour.
Damage is extensive and at least three people have been killed.
Laura Westbrook has more.
Residents in Nehan Province are cleaning up after Typhoon Kajiki swept through Vietnam's central provinces.
The storm, which means swordfish in Japanese, knocked down power lines, uprooted trees,
and ripped corrugated roofs of people's homes and businesses.
The roof collapsed on 42-year-old Teton's restaurant.
Everything we earned during the last summer has been washed away by this storm.
The storm weakened to a tropical depression as it moved across Laos on Tuesday.
But Vietnam's weather agency is warning heavy rain will continue,
raising the risk of flash floods and landslides.
A study published last year warned seas warmed by climate change
will result in Southeast Asia's tropical cyclones forming closer to land,
strengthening faster and lasting longer.

In the midst of Atlantic, Canada's ongoing wildfire emergency,
Prince Edward Island has extended a fire order
that bans all blazes in the province until at least September the 8th.
Fires, fines for causing a fire can reach anywhere up to $50,000 plus victims of crime costs.
And that is the world this hour.
