from cbc news the world this hour i'm stephani scandaris canada is extending its military presence in
latvia the prime minister made the announcement on a visit to the capital riga mark carney says
canada's mission will be extended for three years and we will in the process increase the brigades
capabilities here in latvia reinforce our collective defense strengthen our cooperative security
and keep the NATO presence strong.
Canadian troops have been in Latvia since 2017
as part of Operation Reassurance.
It is part of a wider NATO mission
to strengthen Europe's eastern flank
and to deter Russia from invading Baltic states.
The Prime Minister's office says
there are now 2,000 Canadian personnel in the country.
The extended commitment pushes Canada's presence in the region
through to 2029.
And Carney's announcement in Latvia
is part of his European team.
Tour. Earlier today, he was in Germany where he discussed submarines, specifically a bid by a German
Norwegian company, TKMS, to rebuild the Canadian fleet. Mary Brewster has those details.
It has been announced that Canada has narrowed the list of contenders to build the Navy's new
submarines to two bidders, TKMS and South Korea's Hanwa Ocean. The Prime Minister met with German
Chancellor Friedrich Mers and is slated to participate in a business roundtable with the goal of
diversifying Canada's trade and coming up with a critical minerals partnership. However, as with
many elements of his European trip this week, defense and security issues are near the top of
Carney's agenda. Federal officials speaking on background said the debate within government now
is whether to go the route of requesting proposals or straight into contract negotiations with
the preferred bidder. Cabinet is not expected to decide until next year the earliest which way to
proceed. Marie Brewster, CBC News, Berlin.
Police in Barrie, Ontario, say a missing persons report back in January has grown into one of their largest investigations to date.
They arrested 52-year-old suspect Robert Ladussar earlier this month,
following the murder and dismemberment of two men at a tent encampment.
Barry Police Chief, Rich Johnston, says the community is safe.
I want to reassure our community that this appears to be an isolated occurrence.
We are not looking for any additional suspects, nor do we believe that there are,
additional victims. However, this remains an ongoing investigation. Police have not shared a
motive. Ladussar is facing 33 charges. He remains in custody after being denied bail. U.S. President
Donald Trump says he is firing one of the governors of the Federal Reserve. The dismissal of
Lisa Cook came in a social media post, but Cook says she has no intention of leaving her job. Lisa
Sching reports. This all has to do with Trump demanding the
Federal Reserve lower interest rates.
And for months, blaming it, it's chair, Jerome Powell, for taking too long to do that
and threatening to fire him and to fire Lisa Cook, who's the first black woman to serve
on the Fed's board.
Trump posted a letter addressed to Cook on social media, alleging she may have falsified
records to get favorable terms on a mortgage, saying it's deceitful and potentially criminal.
This is Trump in Washington last week.
What she did was a bad, so I'll fire her if she doesn't resign.
So technically the central bank's founding statute allows him to fire governors for cause,
typically for misconduct or wrongdoing.
So Cook and her lawyer are fighting the dismissal, saying Trump has no grounds to do this.
She hasn't been charged with anything or convicted.
Lisa Sheing, CBC News, Washington.
And she's a love story.
has. Taylor Swift and Travis Kelsey are engaged. A joint social media post shows photos of the
football player down on one knee in a lavish garden and a close-up of the giant diamond and gold
ring. No word on when Swift's wife era begins. She's only recently off her record-breaking
world tour and has already started promoting a new album. And that's your world this hour for
