Starting point is 00:00:30 from cbc news the world this hour i'm stephani scandaris canada is extending its military presence in latvia the prime minister made the announcement on a visit to the capital riga mark carney says canada's mission will be extended for three years and we will in the process increase the brigades capabilities here in latvia reinforce our collective defense strengthen our cooperative security and keep the NATO presence strong. Canadian troops have been in Latvia since 2017 as part of Operation Reassurance. It's part of a wider NATO mission

The Israeli military has released an initial report into its attack on Nassar Hospital in Khan Yunus. Israel is facing international condemnation for the double-tap strike, the second one coming seven minutes after the first. At least 20 people were killed, including five journalists.
Starting point is 00:01:34 Blake Sifton tells us about Israel's claims and a day of protest in Tel Aviv. Israel's military says they were targeting what they believed was a camera belonging to Hamas when they attacked Nasser Hospital. They say they thought it was being used to direct attacks on Israeli forces. However, the Reuters News Agency said that they have long had a camera on the fourth floor that was used to broadcast live views of conunus to international media clients. Reuters, along with the Associated Press, have demanded urgent and transparent accountability. Meanwhile, the family members of the hostages held in Gaza and their supporters
Starting point is 00:02:10 are protesting across Israel on Tuesday, demanding the government reach a ceasefire and abandon its plans to seize and occupy Gaza City. But Israeli spokesperson David Menser says Israel only wants a full and complete deal. Israel's policy is to get all of our hostages home, and that's why we are going for a full agreement. Hamas has agreed to a proposed 60-day ceasefire. Blake Sifton for CBC News, Tel Aviv. Donald Trump says he's firing a governor of the Federal Reserve.
Starting point is 00:02:41 Lisa Cook was the first black woman ever appointed to the role. Cook is fighting back, saying Trump doesn't have the power to fire her. Cameron McIntosh is in Washington. From the opening bell on Wall Street, the U.S. dollar index down amid questions over the independence of the U.S. Federal Reserve. After U.S. President Donald Trump took to social media to fire a Federal Reserve governor. She seems to have had an infraction and she can't have an infraction. Trump is accusing Governor Lisa Cook of mortgage fraud. She's never been charged and says she will sue to keep her job.
Starting point is 00:03:16 The Fed is supposed to act independently of politics. Presidents can appoint governors. It's unclear they can remove them without cause. Economist, Atticine Bacchus can. These moves, these type of political interference moves, just damages Fed's credibility even more. Trump has been highly critical of the Fed for taking too long to cut interest rates.
Starting point is 00:03:37 He's appointed three of seven governors, says he wants to replace Cook with someone who will cut rates. Cameron McIntosh, CBC News, Washington. Health officials in London, Ontario, warn a Legionella outbreak they believe to be over has come back full force. They've confirmed 25 new cases just weeks after declaring an end to the outbreak in early August. Legionnaires is a severe form of a lung infection that causes fever, chills, and shortness of breath. This year's outbreak has been linked to at least 94 cases of serious pneumonia and four deaths.
Starting point is 00:04:13 Investigators traced it to one of Canada's largest meat processors, Sophina Foods. But they stress the disease is not transmitted through eating or drinking and that food products from Sophia are safe to consume. And she has. Taylor Swift and Travis Kelsey are engaged. A joint social media post shows photos of the football player down on one knee in a lavish garden and a close-up of the giant diamond and gold ring. No word on when Swift's wife era begins. She's only recently off her record-breaking world tour and has already started promoting a new album.
