from cbc news it's the world this hour i'm joe cummings denmark's foreign minister is summoning the
country's top u.s diplomat amid allegations the trump administration has been carrying out
covid operations in greenland the danish public broadcaster is reporting that at least three
u.s nationals with ties to the trump white house have been involved in influence on
operations aimed at promoting Greenland's succession from Denmark to the United States.
U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to take Greenland into U.S. jurisdiction,
and he has suggested he may be willing to use military force.
Now to Latvia.
Prime Minister, good morning.
Good morning.
Good to see you.
That's Prime Minister Mark Carney, meeting with Canadian troops today, deployed to Operation Reassurance.
It's an ongoing mission to deter Russia.
aggression in Europe, and Carney has announced it'll be continuing for at least another four years.
Murray Brewster has more.
In many respects, the extension of this mission was expected. I mean, Canada is leading the
multinational NATO brigade. It has for a number of years now. It would be a tough commitment
to walk away from. It is Canada's largest overseas deployment, and it is our biggest
international contribution to deterrence. Now, the prime minister said the threat from Russia
is long term, and that it's not going away anytime soon.
Putin seeks darkness, not Glasnos.
He seeks empire, not Parastroika.
We can't trust, but verify with Putin.
We must deter and fortify.
There are approximately 2,500 Canadian troops that are part of this deployment.
Overall, the brigade that they're leading with 14 other nations
makes it 3,500 troops in Latvia here to deter Russia in case anything.
goes wrong in the Baltics. Murray Brewster, CBC News, Campadaghi, Latvia.
Incidentally, Prime Minister Carney's European visit is now over. He's now on his way back to
Ottawa. The United States Special Envoy to the Middle East is making a bold prediction. He says
the war in Gaza will be settled before the end of the year. It says U.S. President Trump is
scheduled to chair a meeting today on the future of the territory. Lisa Sching has more now from
Washington. U.S. Special Envoy, Steve Whitkoff, said in an interview on
news, there will be talks later today on what the next day in Gaza looks like, referencing
the end of Israel's war in the territory. Now, remember earlier this year, Trump floated
the idea the U.S. should take over control of the region, clear out its 2 million residents,
and build seaside real estate, calling it the Riviera of the Middle East. That plan,
heavily criticized by European and Arab states. This is what Whitkoff said yesterday.
We've got a large meeting in the White House tomorrow, chaired by the president.
It's a very comprehensive plan we're putting together on the next day that I think many people are going to be,
they're going to see how robust it is and how well-meaning it is.
And it reflects President Trump's humanitarian motives here.
Woodcoff also said he expected the war to be settled by the end of the year,
but did not offer any concrete details on that.
Lisa Sching, CBC News, Washington.
A treasure trove of unseen.
Terry Fox footage is being showcased in a new documentary.
With the help of the Fox family, Sean Menard says he's gone through hours of restored and
mostly unseen footage for his film Run Terry Run.
They said that they had some reels that people hadn't seen before, but they thought
there was maybe nine of them, and they had digitized five.
So it became the search for the missing four reels.
I thought to myself, okay, I could probably make a pretty interesting film here with nine
reels and ended up being over 96 reels.
That's Bernard in conversation with the Canadian press.
He says the film sheds new light on Fox's Marathon of Hope.
Menard plans to premiere the film in November in Toronto, with the score performed live
by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.
And that is The World This Hour.
