Starting point is 00:00:30 from cbc news the world this hour i'm gina louise phillips don't just say this is about thoughts and prayers right now these kids were literally praying minneapolis mayor jacob fray says the city is in shock after two young children were shot dead at a catholic school this morning 17 others are injured most of them children minneapolis police chief brian o'hara says the attack happened during morning mass marking the first week of school. During the mass, a gunman approached on the outside, on the side of the building, and began firing a rifle through the church windows, towards the children sitting in the pews at the mass. This was a deliberate act of violence against innocent children.
Starting point is 00:01:17 O'Harris says the suspected shooter was armed with a rifle, a shotgun, and a pistol. He was in his early 20s and took his own life shortly after. Denmark is summoning the U.S. ambassador amid allegations the Trump administration has been carrying out covert operations in Greenland. The Danish public broadcaster reports they involved three U.S. nationals with ties to the White House. They allegedly carried out influence operations aimed at promoting Greenland's secession from Denmark to the United States. The leaders of France, Germany and Poland say they're confident Moldova has a future in the European Union. Union. They're in the former Soviet Republic to mark Independence Day. The country is divided between pro-Europe and pro-Russian forces on the eve of an election. Julie Chapman has the story.
Starting point is 00:02:10 European leaders fear Moldova's independence is at risk once again. That's why some of them are there to reinforce the benefits of joining the European Union. French President Emmanuel Macron says Moldova's future is with Europe. despite what he called attempts to distort its democracy. The country will hold parliamentary elections in September, and authorities warn the Kremlin is running bribery, disinformation and influence campaigns against pro-European candidates. Moldova's president Maya Sandu has tried to set her country on a European path.
Starting point is 00:02:47 But as the next election approaches, there are fears Russia could affect the outcome. The three EU leaders are promising technical and diplomatic support from Moldova in defending itself against Russian cyber attacks. Julia Chapman, CBC News, London. Conservative leader Pierre Pollyev is demanding the Carney liberals scrap the clean fuel standards, calling them a carbon tax 2.0. Mark Carney is bringing back the carbon tax. He calls it the clean fuel standard, clean fuel regulations.
Starting point is 00:03:18 According to the parliamentary budget officer, it will add 17 cents a leader to your gas. We want to axe all carbon taxes for good, for real, for everyone, forever. The Clean Fuel Standard was implemented in the summer of 2023. It is part of Ottawa's plan to reduce Canada's greenhouse gas emissions. Environmentalists criticise the analysis of the parliamentary budget officer. They say it doesn't take into account the cost of climate change. While a long-awaited rocket launch from a small Newfoundland town is facing another delay,
Starting point is 00:03:52 The rocket is built by Canadian company Nordspace. It's small, and it's not expected to fly all the way to space. But as Peter Cowan reports, the launch would still be a big milestone. It's our first launch, so we wanted to be perfect. Rahul Goyle and his team have been waiting on the weather. The first day of Nord Space's launch window was Monday. But winds and rain at their launch site in the Newfoundland town of St. Lawrence have scrubbed the launch every day since.
Starting point is 00:04:19 You know, these are very sensitive, very expensive, and safety is involved, so everyone wants to make sure that they go really well. So this is something that we're totally used to. The company is trying to be the first to design, build, and launch a rocket from Canada, eventually giving the country the capability of launching its own satellites into space. After a year of planning, the mayor of St. Lawrence, Kevin Pittman, can't wait to see the launch. But to actually see it go into space, it'll make it real. The company is hopeful the weather Thursday or Friday will let them finally see their rocket fly.
