Starting point is 00:00:50 this is an unthinkable completely senseless act it's hard to hear minneapolis's police chief saying their investigation into the enunciation school mass shooting points to a horrifying motive. This shooter had the intention to terrorize those innocent children. Two children were killed. Several other people were injured when the shooter opened fire through church windows as school children attended morning mass, firing at least 116 rifle rounds. Joe Thompson is acting U.S. attorney for Minnesota.
Starting point is 00:01:21 The shooter idolized some of the most notorious school shooters and mass murders in our country's history. The focus of the investigation now, what motivation? the shooter to attack where and when they did. Meanwhile, Minneapolis's mayor is demanding an assault weapons ban. Cameron McIntosh, CBC News, Washington. Today is the last day Canadian retailers can ship small amounts of goods to the United States duty-free. The U.S. is eliminating an exemption that allows for duty-free imports of less expensive packages. As Paula Duhat-Chek reports, it's left many small businesses scrambling. Our U.S. customer, the last several years, has made up 35% of our sales.
Starting point is 00:02:04 Jess Sternberg owns the Vancouver-based clothing brand free label. She says Americans are loyal shoppers, but she can't keep relying on them to grow her business. So we've literally turned off shipping to the United States. Starting tomorrow, the U.S. is eliminating the de minimis exemption. It allowed orders of small value under $800 into the U.S. duty-free. That's going to hurt many small businesses, especially on. online retailers, pushing up their costs. Some are scrambling to figure out how or if they can keep shipping to the U.S. Bob Kirk is Executive Director of the Canadian Apparel Federation.
Starting point is 00:02:38 And it was a fantastic program. It allowed a lot of smaller companies to grow, and it's not here anymore. The Canadian Federation of Independent Business is calling for more support for small businesses affected by trade disruptions. Paula Duhac's CBC News, Toronto. To Ottawa now. The Canadian sport system is in crisis. It is broken. That's Lise Mesa Nov, the head of the future of Sport Commission presenting its preliminary report. Its mandate is to look at maltreatment and abuse in sports. Mesa Nov says the Commission found widespread problems, including the biggest two. Lack of protection for our children, widespread abuse and maltreatment within sport environments across the country, from grassroots participation to the national stage. It calls,
Starting point is 00:03:27 culture of silence that often discourages individuals from speaking out for fear of retribution. She says new measures are needed to prevent abuse and maltreatment and to respond to complaints. She recommends federal funding be conditional on sports bodies adhering to best practices. At the UN... Gaza is piled with rubble, piled with bodies, and piled with examples of what may be serious violations of international law. Secretary General Antonio Gutierrez is calling on Israel to reverse its decision to occupy Gaza City. He warns the operation will have devastating consequences for hundreds of thousands of people. Gutierrez is once again calling for an immediate ceasefire and release of all hostages held by Hamas.
Starting point is 00:04:14 Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand has appointed Canada's new High Commissioner to India. Veteran diplomat Christopher Couter gets the job nearly a year after, both countries expelled their top envoys. Relations between Canada and India have been strained since Canadian police accused New Delhi of being involved in the 23 murder of a sick activist near Vancouver. India has also named its representative to Canada weeks after Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, attended the G7 Summit in Alberta. And that is the world this hour.
