Many mom-and-pop businesses in Canada will face a new hurdle tomorrow when a U.S. duty exemptions on orders worth less than $800 disappears. Now people shipping goods to the U.S. will have to pay a flat duty of between $80 and $200. Paula Duhatchek has more.
Starting point is 00:00:57 I mean, it's a big wrench to throw into things. Amit Takar owns Brampton-based clothing brand House of Blanks. It makes t-shirts, hoodies, and sweatpants popular with U.S. customers. You know, over 50% of our business goes there. Takar says the end of the trade exemption means he expects to pay new brokerage fees to get his products into the U.S. Even if it's $50, there's a nearly $20 fee. I'm sure we'll lose customers. Up till now, companies could send up to $800 worth of goods into the U.S. duty-free.
Starting point is 00:01:27 that exemption ends Friday. John Boscarial, co-head of international trade at the law firm McCarthy Taitro, says the end of Diminimus is a big deal. It hits mom-and-pop shops disproportionately. Yeah, so this one is right now knitting a t-shirt. As for a meet-to-car with House of Blanks, he says the plan will likely involve a renewed focus on a Canadian consumer. Paula Duhatchek, CBC News, Brampton, Ontario. France, Germany and the UK triggered the UN Security Council process. re-imposing sanctions on Iran. They warned Tehran about their intentions weeks ago,
Starting point is 00:02:04 after it halted inspections of its nuclear facilities. Iran is calling the motion illegal, saying it will, in its words, respond appropriately. A view echoed by Russia's deputy ambassador to the UN, Dmitri Pollyansky. It's something that is absolutely showing that the Western countries do not know what is diplomacy about. They don't care about diplomacy. They care only about blackmail and threats and coercion of independent countries. Polyansky says the Security Council should not consider the motion. There is now a 30-day window for Iran to negotiate. Minneapolis police say the shooter that fired into a church and school acted alone.
Starting point is 00:02:47 Two children were killed. But what's not clear is the reason for the rampage. Cameron McIntosh has more. This is an unthinkable, completely senseless act. It's hard to hear. Minneapolis's police chief saying their investigation into the enunciation school mass shooting points to a horrifying motive. The shooter had the intention to terrorize those innocent children. Two children were killed.
Starting point is 00:03:11 Several other people were injured when the shooter opened fire through church windows as school children attended morning mass. Firing at least 116 rifle rounds. Joe Thompson is acting U.S. attorney for Minnesota. The shooter idolized some of the most notorious school shows. shooters and mass murders in our country's history. The focus of the investigation now, what motivated the shooter to attack where and when they did? Meanwhile, Minneapolis's mayor is demanding an assault weapons ban.
Starting point is 00:03:40 Cameron McIntosh, CBC News, Washington. Ottawa and New Delhi are taking steps towards repairing their rocky relationship. Canada and India have named new high commissioners. Rafi Bujicanian has more. The excellency, Prime Minister, is a great honor to host. at the G7. Starting point is 00:04:05 I'm very much abhori saying he was grateful for the invitation, but it was controversial. Two years ago, former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India of involvement in the murder of a Canadian sick activist, Hardip Singh Niger, in British Columbia. And last fall, the RCMP said India is playing a role in a rash of gang violence in Canada, including murder and extortion. Allegations India denies. India recalled their High Commissioner to Canada and expelled Canada's from India. Many opposed Modi's presence in Alberta.
