The people of Fort Providence in the northwest territories have been told to pack up and leave town
as a fast-moving wildfire heads towards the hamlet.
As Yasmin Renea reports, officials say the flames could reach the community as early as this evening.
This is our troublesome wind.
Wildlife information officer Mike Westwick says severe northerly winds made the wildfire
grow significantly overnight. He says the blaze is now two kilometers north of the hamlet of Fort
Providence. There is the chance that this fire does reach the edge of the community by the end of
the day. Aircraft have been unable to attack the fire so far because of poor visibility. Officials
say the head of the fire is too wide for crews to directly attack the flames. Westwick says the
focus right now is on protecting homes. Cruise have soaked structures along the edge of the community
and have installed sprinklers and a water cannon.
Just doing everything we can to keep the things that people care about within Fort Providence safe.
Keep that community intact and make sure people have a good safe home to come back to.
Evacuees are being asked to head immediately to Hay River.

The number of new wildfires in BC has shut up over the past few days
caused by hot in dry conditions and lightning strikes.
The coastal fire center in southwest BC saw just,
over 1,000 lightning strikes on Friday alone, and a number of fires were sparked near Pemberton.
Sam Belyan is a fire information officer.
Fire danger rating across the coastal fire center right now is a mix of moderate to high.
So in these conditions, any spark can cause a wildfire.
We did see some precipitation along with this lightning event, but it won't be enough to soak
those finer fuels on our forest floors that are primed for ignition or to extinguish any fires.
Belion says that many of those fires were located in high altitude.
areas. And in Nova Scotia, officials say the Long Lake Fire in the Annapolis Valley is still
burning out of control, but no more damage has been reported, and favorable weather is helping
crews make progress on containing the fire. Next to Ukraine. Firefighters battle fires at
multiple power stations in Ukraine's a desert region. They are attacked by Russian drones overnight.
About 30,000 people were left without power, as Russia's war on Ukraine continues well into a
its third year. Interworld leaders are in China today for a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation
Organization. Among those attending, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister
Narendra Modi. Organizers see the SEO as a counterweight to Western-led global institutions.
As Patrick Fock reports, this year's summit comes as the Trump administration wages its
international trade war. Security has been stepped up in Tianjin as this summit of the
Shanghai Corporation Organization gets underway, also known as the
The SCO, the gathering brings together heads of state and delegations from across Asia and the Middle East.
It's been touted as an alternative to the NATO Military Alliance and comes as Washington as shaking up its partnerships and waging a global trade war.
Russian President Vladimir Putin will be China's key guest at the event.
Earlier today, Chinese leader Xi Jinping held bilateral talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
She told his Indian counterpart that two countries must handle their relationships strategically,
and with long-term perspective.
It's the first time Modi is visiting China in seven years
and comes as relations between India and the U.S. have been strained.
That's after Washington imposed 50% tariffs on Indian goods
as a response to New Delhi's purchases of Russian oil.

Israel has been pounding the suburbs of Gaza City since last night.
With air and ground strikes destroying homes
and driving more families out of the area.
Local health authorities say at least 30 people were killed today,
including 13 people trying to get food from an aid site.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with his security cabinet today
to discuss plans to seize all of Gaza City.
That is your world this hour.
