Starting point is 00:00:26 Certain conditions apply. From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Mike Miles. The people of Fort Providence in the northwest territories have been told to pack up and leave town as a fast-moving wildfire heads towards the hamlet. As Yasmin Renea reports, officials say the flames could reach the community as early as this evening. This is our troublesome wind. Wildlife information officer Mike Westwick says severe northerly winds made the wildfire grow significantly overnight. He says the blaze is now two kilometers north of the hamlet of Fort
Starting point is 00:01:05 Providence. There is the chance that this fire does reach the edge of the community by the end of the day. Aircraft have been unable to attack the fire so far because of poor visibility. Officials say the head of the fire is too wide for crews to directly attack the flames. Westwick says the focus right now is on protecting homes. Cruise have soaked structures along the edge of the community and have installed sprinklers and a water cannon. Just doing everything we can to keep the things that people care about within Fort Providence safe. Keep that community intact and make sure people have a good safe home to come back to. Evacuees are being asked to head immediately to Hay River.
Starting point is 00:01:44 Yasmin Ranea, CBC News, Vancouver. The number of new wildfires in BC has shut up over the past few days caused by hot in dry conditions and lightning strikes. The coastal fire center in southwest BC saw just, over 1,000 lightning strikes on Friday alone, and a number of fires were sparked near Pemberton. Sam Belyan is a fire information officer. Fire danger rating across the coastal fire center right now is a mix of moderate to high. So in these conditions, any spark can cause a wildfire.
Starting point is 00:02:14 We did see some precipitation along with this lightning event, but it won't be enough to soak those finer fuels on our forest floors that are primed for ignition or to extinguish any fires. Belion says that many of those fires were located in high altitude. areas. And in Nova Scotia, officials say the Long Lake Fire in the Annapolis Valley is still burning out of control, but no more damage has been reported, and favorable weather is helping crews make progress on containing the fire. Next to Ukraine. Firefighters battle fires at multiple power stations in Ukraine's a desert region. They are attacked by Russian drones overnight. Among those attending, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Organizers see the SEO as a counterweight to Western-led global institutions. As Patrick Fock reports, this year's summit comes as the Trump administration wages its international trade war. Security has been stepped up in Tianjin as this summit of the Shanghai Corporation Organization gets underway, also known as the The SCO, the gathering brings together heads of state and delegations from across Asia and the Middle East. It's been touted as an alternative to the NATO Military Alliance and comes as Washington as shaking up its partnerships and waging a global trade war.
Starting point is 00:03:43 Russian President Vladimir Putin will be China's key guest at the event. Earlier today, Chinese leader Xi Jinping held bilateral talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She told his Indian counterpart that two countries must handle their relationships strategically, and with long-term perspective. It's the first time Modi is visiting China in seven years and comes as relations between India and the U.S. have been strained. That's after Washington imposed 50% tariffs on Indian goods as a response to New Delhi's purchases of Russian oil.
Starting point is 00:04:14 Patrick Falk, for CBC News, Singapore. Israel has been pounding the suburbs of Gaza City since last night. With air and ground strikes destroying homes and driving more families out of the area. Local health authorities say at least 30 people were killed today, including 13 people trying to get food from an aid site. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with his security cabinet today to discuss plans to seize all of Gaza City.
