Charitable gaming, community good. From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Mike Miles. In Nova Scotia, officials say the Long Lake Fire in the Annapolis Valley is still out of control.
Starting point is 00:00:43 The good news, no more damage has been reported, and favorable weather is helping fire crews make progress on containing the fire. But as Julia Wong tells us, evacuees are worried and want to go back home. Anxiety is absolutely increasing. Jonathan Gillis is trying to keep a. evacuees calm. It's been more than two weeks since the Long Lake Wildfire forced hundreds of people from their homes in Nova Scotia's Annapolis Valley. It's destroyed 20 houses and damaged many others. Gillis, the president of the West Dalhousie Community Hall, says residents were not prepared
Starting point is 00:01:17 to be out of their homes for this long, and some, like Robert Howie, are losing patience. It would be nice to know when we're going back in, not as a date, but what we're working towards. Officials say they're working to keep the fire from spreading to other communities and say they're aiming to get evacuees home as soon as possible. Julia Wong, CBC News, Bridgetown, Nova Scotia. For the second time in a week, an evacuation order has been issued in the Northwest Territories. This time, it was for Fort Providence. Fierce winds are pushing a wildfire toward the hamlet and could reach the outskirts tonight.
Starting point is 00:01:52 Juanita Taylor has the latest. Fort Providence is the latest community that's been issued in evacuation. order. That came through just before 9 a.m. local time. Fire officials are calling the situation critical. Those northerly winds, they are expected again into the evening, pushing the fire closer to Fort Providence. And fire officials are saying that there's a very good chance that the fire will reach Fort Providence tonight. But the community has been building a firebreak, and they're hoping that that will prove successful. And crews have set up sprinklers and water cannons. Unfortunately, aircraft haven't been able to be used because of poor visibility,
Starting point is 00:02:33 but fire officials now say that the focus is on structure protection on the ground because the head of the fire is just too wide to directly attack with crews. Juanita Taylor reporting from Yellowknife. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskyy says a suspect's under arrest in the murder of the country's former parliamentary speaker. Andre Perubi was gunned down in broad daylight yesterday in Levif. Selingsky says the accused is spoken with police and that investigators are cracking down, tracking down critical details. Earlier firefighters battled flames at multiple power stations in Ukraine's Odessa region.
Starting point is 00:03:13 They were attacked by Russian drones overnight. Almost 30,000 people were left without power. Israeli officials say they have killed Hamas spokesman Abu Ubi Dai. Prime Minister Benjamin Njahou announced that a joint operation by the Israeli defense forces in Shinbet, its intelligence agency, targeted Abu Obidah over the weekend. There has been no comment from Hamas. At the Vatican, Pope Leo offered a prayer in English for those involved in the mass shooting in Minneapolis last week. Two children were killed, 15 others wounded, along with three senior citizens. The Pontiff's Sunday message is usually in Italian. The Pope also repeated his desire for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine. Former Donald Trump lawyer Rudolf Giuliani is recovering from injuries suffered in a crash. He was being driven in New Hampshire Saturday night when he was rear-ended. Michael Ragusa, Giuliani's head of security, says he suffered a fractured vertebrae along with cuts and bruises. Regusa adds, the incident was not a targeted attack, pointing out no one knew was Giuliani because he was in a rented Ford Bronco.
