Starting point is 00:01:04 The US Geological Survey says its epicentre was in the remote mountainous eastern region in the province of Kunah, some 27 kilometres north-east of the city of Jalabad in Nangahar province. Local disaster management say deaths and injuries have been reported in a number of districts, with reports of people frantically digging through rubble with their hands. The area was hit by flash floods at the weekend. and there have been reports of further aftershocks and landslides blocking remote areas. Taliban officials say whole villages have been destroyed. The Taliban-run government is appealing for aid from international organisations.
Starting point is 00:01:44 Afghanistan is prone to earthquakes with a number of known fault lines along the Hindu Kush mountain range. The issues with access will also make it difficult to assess the numbers of injured and dead. Anna Cunningham, CBC News, London. The wildfire threatening Fort Providence Northwest Territories is now just a kilometer away from the hamlet. The 700-person community had already been ordered to evacuate. Now, all emergency personnel are being told to leave immediately. The CBC's Juanita Taylor is in Hay River talking to evacuees. Evacquees looking somewhat traumatized after a two-hour bus ride from Fort Providence, bringing them to Hay River.
Starting point is 00:02:28 It's quite smoky. I mean, that smoke was getting thick. Some 700 of people who had to flee from an encroaching wildfire, 89,000 hectares in size, bigger than Toronto. It's really red. Frieda Lissage says she's never seen anything like it. It could just hear, it sounds scary. Those who made it to the evacuation center uncertain of what will come next. Mike Westwick is the territory's fire information officer.
Starting point is 00:02:57 The town of Hay River has sent. firefighters to town as well to assist in this effort. While residents have been told to get out, there are still people there protecting the hamlet by putting up sprinklers and water cannons trying to win the battle against Mother Nature. Juanita Taylor, CBC News, Hay River, Northwest Territories. Russia is suspected of jamming the GPS signal of an airplane carrying EU Commissioner Ursula von der Leyen today. The plane was over Bulgaria when the incident occurred. An EU spokesperson says they've received information from Bulgarian authorities suspected blatant Russian interference.

Yemen's Houthi rebels have resumed their attacks on ships in the Red Sea. A spokesperson says they launched the ballistic missile at an Israeli oil tanker off the coast. of Saudi Arabia, he claims it was a direct hit sinking the ship. This has not been independently verified. The Houthis have said the attacks on shipping routes are a show of solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. But this time, it may also be retaliation for last week's Israeli airstrikes that killed senior Houthi leaders in Yemen. Ukrainian president, Vlomir Zelensky, says a suspect
Starting point is 00:04:20 has been arrested in the weekend assassination of a prominent politician. Andre Pair Ubi, was a former parliamentary speaker. He was shot dead Saturday on a street in Lviv by a suspect posing as a courier. In a statement on social media, Zelensky said the suspect is talking to authorities.
