The Taliban in Afghanistan says more than 800 people have been killed in a 6.0 magnitude earthquake.
More than 2,500 others have been hurt.
The epicenter was in a remote mountainous area, making the emergency response difficult.
Anna Cunningham has the latest.
Rescue efforts are slow and difficult, surrounded by the rubble of collapsed buildings.
One person is carried down on a stretcher towards a waiting helicopter.
For this young boy, the loss and destruction from this earthquake is too much.
It's struck shortly before midnight local time, the epicentre in Kunar province.
It's remote at the best of times.
Children and elders are trapped under the rubble, says one man.
We need urgent help, he says.
Rescue helicopters have been landing at Jalalabad,
local residents seen helping Taliban soldiers to carry the wounded to ambulances.
after shocks and landslides from recent flash floods, hampering efforts to reach those trapped.
The Taliban-run government is appealing for aid from international organizations.
The issues with access will also make it difficult to assess the numbers of injured and dead.

The wildfire threatening Fort Providence Northwest Territories is now just one kilometer away from the hamlet.
The 700-person community had already been ordered to evacuate.
Now, all emergency personnel are being told to leave immediately.
The CBCC's Juanita Taylor is in Hay River talking to evacuees.
Evacuees looking somewhat traumatized after a two-hour bus ride from Fort Providence,
bringing them to Hay River.
It was quite smoky.
I mean, that smoke was getting thick.
Some 700 of people who had to flee from an incorprivile.

It's really red.
Frida Lissage says she's never seen anything like it.
It could just hear it, it sounds scary.
Those who made it to the evacuation center
uncertain of what will come next.
Mike Westwick is the territory's fire information officer.
The town of Hay River has sent firefighters to town as well
to assist in this effort.
While residents have been told to get out,
there are still people there protecting the hamlet
by putting up sprinklers and water cannons
trying to win the battle against Mother Nature.

The European Commission says a plane carrying its president
was the target of a radar jamming.
Spokesperson Ariana Podestis says it happened
as Ursula von der Leyen's plane
was flying over Bulgaria yesterday.
Today, Bulgarian officials are blaming Russia.
Of course, this will only reinforce even further our unshakable commitment to ramp up defense capabilities and support for Ukraine.
And, of course, the EU will continue to invest into defense spending and in Europe's readiness even more after this incident.
Von der Leyen's plane landed safely despite the GPS signal loss.
There are reports that the pilots had to use paper maps to land.
A judge is temporarily blocking the deportation of more than 70 Guatemalan minors from the U.S.
Some were on planes when the judge's order came down.
Lawyers for the unaccompanied children say they would be at risk if they return to their home country.
The Department of Justice says their parents and guardians asked for them to be sent home.
The judge has ordered the government not to remove any unaccompanied Guatemalan miners in the U.S. for two weeks.
Ukrainian President Vlomir Zelensky says a suspect has been arrested in the weekend assassination of a prominent politician.
Andre Perrube was a former parliamentary speaker. He was shot dead on Saturday on a street in Leviv by a suspect posing as a courier.
In a statement on social media, Zelensky said the suspect is talking to authorities.
