Starting point is 00:00:26 Certain conditions apply. From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Neil Hurland. The Trump administration is taking the fight over tariffs to the U.S. Supreme Court. The White House is asking the court to rule quickly that the president has the power to impose sweeping trade penalties. The petition was filed late last night. We have a very, very big case in the Supreme Court. I can only say this. If we don't win that case, our country is going to suffer so greatly.
Starting point is 00:01:03 What's the backup plan, sir? But I think we're going to have a big victory. A federal appeals court in the U.S. has already ruled that most of President Trump's tariffs are illegal, but that court is allowing the tariffs to stay in place for now. Prime Minister Mark Carney and his cabinet will wrap up their planning session in Toronto today. Carney and his team are preparing for the return of parliament and the return of conservative leader Pierre Pahliav, who will be back in the House of Commons
Starting point is 00:01:31 after losing his seat in the last federal election. Tom Perry has more. We're going to focus on being efficient. As he kicked off his cabinet meeting yesterday, Prime Minister Mark Carney leaned hard into a few key issues, promising to bring in a budget that would include investment but also austerity. So we need to rein in spending. We need to find efficiencies.
Starting point is 00:01:54 Carney as well, revealing he spoke to U.S. President Donald Trump this week, about a wide range of issues, including tariffs and trade. But while Carney was mapping out his government's priorities for the coming months, the reality is that Mark Carney is failing. Conservative leader Pierre Pahliav was in the Toronto area, taking aim at the Prime Minister over his budget plans and dealings with the U.S. President. Pauliev, who lost his Ottawa area seat in the last election, will be back in the House of Commons when Parliament resumes after winning a safe conservative riding in Alberta in a

Voters in Jamaica have re-elected Andrew Holness as Prime Minister for the third time. Make no mistake about it. This was not an easy victory. Make no mistake about it. This was a fight. The Jamaica Labor Party beat the opposition People's National Party, corruption and economic concerns dominated the campaign. Under the leadership of Andrew Holness, murders have dropped 43 percent in the country the most significant decline in decades. He also promised to raise the minimum wage in Jamaica. Well, she calls herself the Queen of Canada, and now she's behind bars.
Starting point is 00:03:17 A cult leader is now in custody after the RCMP rated an abandoned school building. As Jeffrey Tram reports, Romano Didolo and her followers had been camping in the building in a small Saskatchewan village. She calls herself the Queen of Canada, and now she's in police custody. Romano Didolo's arrest was captured by her phone in a live stream. Didolo was one of 16 adults taken by Saskatchewan RCMP after they received a report of a firearm. A search warrant was executed at a former service. school in the village of Richmond, located 365 kilometers west of Regina. Inspector Ashley St. Germain is with the RCMP.
