This hour, I'm Kate McGilfrey. The RCMP are providing an update on a mass stabbing in Manitoba. One victim and the suspect are dead on Hollow Water First Nation, and at least six others were taken to a trauma center in Winnipeg, including a police officer. Cameron McIntosh has the latest. RCMP confirmed multiple people were stabbed on Hollowater First Nation early this morning. One victim is dead, as is the suspect. Police have closed access into the community, but say there is no longer a public danger. Police are also at the scene of a car crash near the community that appears to be related.
Starting point is 00:01:06 Police say at least six people were brought to hospital in Winnipeg for treatment, including two by air ambulance. RCMP say they'll have more information later this afternoon. Cameron McIntosh, CBC News, Winnipeg. Saskatchewan RCMP says all 16 people arrested at a compound in Richmond yesterday have been released. Among them is the self-proclaimed queen of Canada, Romana Didolo. Police raided the decommissioned school in the small village yesterday after reports of a firearm in the building. They say two people have now been re-arrested.
Starting point is 00:01:40 They've also seized 13 imitation semi-automatic handguns, ammunition, and electronic devices. No charges have been laid so far. Portuguese officials say it is highly likely that two Canadians are among the victims killed in a finicular crash. A derailment yesterday killed 16 people and injured more than 20. While authorities worked to identify the dead, they have yet to determine who or what was responsible. Alison Roberts reports. Portugal's Prime Minister caused the crash one of the greatest tragedies in the nation's recent history.
Starting point is 00:02:16 Luis Montenegro is promising swift answers from police and forensic experts amid pressure to determine the causes of a disaster that killed and injured many foreign national. as well as Portuguese. The Mayor of Lisbon says he has asked the municipal company that runs the funicular to commission an external investigation into the accident as well as its own. Probes by prosecutors and the Transport Safety Authority are underway. But local media are focusing on reports that the cable that linked the two carriages may have detached and backup brakes failed.
Starting point is 00:02:52 The Elevador da Gloria as the 140-year-old funicular is, is known, was a major attraction often packed with foreign tourists. Alison Roberts for CBC News, Lisbon. An Israeli military spokesperson says Israel now controls 40% of Gaza City. And he says the army will expand its operation in the coming days to increase the pressure on Hamas. Gaza health authorities say Israeli fire across the enclave had killed dozens of people since yesterday. Most deaths occurred in Gaza City where thousands of residents defied Israeli orders to leave. They also say the number of Palestinians killed in Gaza has topped 64,000, about half of them, women and children.
Starting point is 00:03:40 U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. took a grilling from Democrats on Capitol Hill today on the recent turmoil at federal health agencies. Since taking his job, Kennedy has restricted those eligible for COVID shots and has fired all 17 expert members of a CDC vaccine advisory panel. Senator Michael Bennett pressed Kennedy on his vaccine policy overhaul. I'm asking the questions for Mr. Kennedy on behalf of parents and schools and teachers all over the United States of America who deserve so much better than your leadership. That's what this conversation is about. Senator, they deserve the truth, and that's what we're going to give them for the first time. Kennedy also defended his recent ousting of the CDC director. He says he might need to fire even more people at the agency.
Starting point is 00:04:32 And Quebec City will host two major hockey tournaments in the coming years. For the first time, the city's been picked to host the Women's World Hockey Championship in 27.
