Starting point is 00:00:41 first nation today was the sister of the suspect another seven people were injured as details emerged from hollow water first nation Cameron mackintosh has the latest the community is all shaken up from it christie williams says her father was one of eight people injured in the early morning stabbing attack his door was kicking into he was sleeping in his bet. RCMP say 26-year-old Tyrone Samard stabbed at least eight people in hollow water First Nation, including his 18-year-old sister who died. Samard was also killed as he fled in a stolen vehicle and collided with an RCMP SUV. An officer was taken to hospital with critical but non-life-threatening injuries. Vancouver officials have released the final report on the car-ramming attack at a Filipino street festival in April. 11 people were killed and dozens of people injured.
Starting point is 00:01:52 A preliminary review found the Lapu-Lapu Festival went through all proper procedures for an event deemed low-risk. Vancouver Mayor Ken Simms says the final report confirms that that is still the case, but it also has a list of key recommendations for the city. Reinforce safety in all outdoor event planning, standardized early planning and entry and exit control, the creation of vehicle mitigation guidance, expanded training and supports for event organizers.
Starting point is 00:02:26 The mayor says Vancouver will consider asking the prevention, and federal governments to standardize safety legislation. A member of the Canadian Armed Forces has gone missing in Latvia. Warrant officer George Hull was deployed on Operation Reassurance, currently Canada's largest overseas mission. It's part of NATO's defense measures in Europe, launched following Russia's invasion of Crimea in 2014. The military says Hull was last seen on Tuesday in the town of Adagyi.
Starting point is 00:02:55 Latvian police and NATO troops are actively conducting search operations. Mark Carney's cabinet has wrapped its second day of meetings at a cabinet retreat in Toronto. Industry Minister Melanie Jolie says the federal government is focused on the economy by protecting existing jobs and creating new ones with new projects. We need to invest in housing and we will be coming up with a list of major projects in the coming weeks. We're investing more in defense. Well, we've increased the salaries and the benefits of our Canadian Armed Forces as well. we need to make sure that we're building back capacity, industrial capacity, in Canada. Those investments are coming at a price.
Starting point is 00:03:35 Finance Minister Francois Philippe Champagne is warning of tough choices ahead. He says the government's fall budget will contain austerity measures as well as spending. Searchers have recovered hundreds more bodies in the Afghan mountain villages destroyed by an earthquake earlier this week. A Taliban government spokesman says the number of those killed is now more than 20. 200 and more than 3,600 people were injured. The shallow 6.0 quake damaged or destroyed 98% of the buildings in the Kuna province. An Israeli military spokesperson says
Starting point is 00:04:16 Israel now controls 40% of Gaza City. And he says the army will expand its operation in the coming days to increase pressure on Hamas. Gaza health authorities say Israeli fire across the enclave had killed dozens of people since yesterday. Most deaths occurred in Gaza City, where thousands of residents defied Israeli orders to leave. They also say the number of Palestinians killed in Gaza has topped 64,000.
