CBC News has learned the Manitoba suspect at the center of a mass stabbing on a First Nation yesterday was out on bail at the time. Police alleged the man killed his sister
Starting point is 00:00:49 and injured seven others on Hollow Water First Nation. Rosanna Hemple reports. Court records show Tyrone Samard was out on bail when the attacks happened. Police say the 26-year-old stabbed eight people on Hollow Water First Nation, northeast of Winnipeg. Samard later died in a highway collision with an RCMP cruiser. Court records show Samard was charged with assault with a weapon and mischief for alleged incidents in June. He was already facing other charges, including sexual assault for alleged offenses from 2017.
Starting point is 00:01:25 Samarred was granted release from custody in June with conditions. including a curfew, and in order not to use alcohol or drugs or possess weapons. He was also ordered not to contact four people. Meanwhile, Manitoba's Provincial Health Organization says three patients were discharged from hospital yesterday, while four others remain hospitalized. Rosanna Hempel, CBC News, Winnipeg. Prime Minister Mark Carney announced billions in funding today
Starting point is 00:01:55 that he says will transform the Canadian economy and shore it up to withstand trade shocks from the Trump administration. The measures include a rescaling help for workers, larger loans for businesses, and a buy-Canada policy. Carney also announced his government is delaying its electric vehicle mandate. It would have required 20% of all new vehicles sold in Canada next year to be electric. Conservative leader Pierre Pollyev says Carney is going about it all wrong. After being a passionate advocate for banning gas-powered vehicles, He's finally admitted that the Conservatives were right,
Starting point is 00:02:29 but he's doing a clumsy retreat, saying that he's going to delay this mandate. So now businesses who would otherwise consider investing in auto-making here in Canada will have to put that investment on hold while Mark Carney dithers. Carney has ordered a 60-day review of the EV mandate to make sure the program is cost-effective. A 12-year-old Alberta boy has been charged with the attempted murder of his 7-year-old brother. The 12-year-old initially told Lethbridge police that an unknown male had entered their home.
Starting point is 00:03:01 But Staff Sergeant Ashland Snowden says that wasn't true. A search warrant was executed at the residence and a knife believed to be involved in the offense was seized. As the investigation progressed, evidence was obtained indicating the 12-year-old boy had stabbed his brother repeatedly and believed he'd killed him. The 12-year-old is in custody and the younger boy is in stable condition. Hundreds of workers at a Hyundai facility in Georgia have been detained. in a major raid by U.S. immigration authorities. Many of those workers are South Korean. The raid forced a pause in the construction of a car battery factory,
Starting point is 00:03:35 part of a major investment in the state by the carmaker. The Department of Homeland Security alleges that those detained were working illegally. This has been a multi-month criminal investigation where we have developed evidence and presented that evidence in order to obtain a judicial. search warrant. We are sending a clear and unequivocal message that those who exploit our workforce and violate federal laws will be held accountable. South Korea accuses U.S. authorities of violating
Starting point is 00:04:10 the rights of Korean nationals. Hayandes, as none of those detained, were directly employed by the carmaker itself. And a prop from the original Star Wars movies has sold for more than $5 million. The red lightsaber used by Darth Vader was sold as part of a movie memorabilia auction. According to the listing, it does show some signs of wear, as can be expected for a prop that was used extensively in two movies.
