Charitable gaming, community good. From CBC News, The World This Hour, I'm Mike Miles. Prime Minister Mark Carney's unveiled his government's plan to rescue the Canadian economy.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Today, to fortify our economic strength, my colleagues and I are announcing a series of ambitious new measures to protect, build, and transform our strategic industries. These are the sectors where workers and businesses have been impacted by those tariffs and trade disruptions. Measures being rolled out include a $5 billion strategic fund to help companies in sectors hit hardest by U.S. tariffs, a retraining and employment program to help up the 50,000 workers, a multi-million dollar production incentive for Canada's canola producers affected by Chinese tariffs. Carney says Ottawa will roll out a bi-Canadian initiative. To support Canadian industries, the government's introducing a new comprehensive buy-Canadian policy that will move from best efforts to buy Canadian
Starting point is 00:01:30 to a clear obligation to do so. As well, Ottawa will help businesses trying to access new markets overseas. Spending its wheels in those economic woods is Canada's auto industry. Its workers are some of the hardest hit by UF's tariffs. Carney, Friday, also offered the sector some help by putting the brakes on a sales mandate for electric vehicles. David Thurton has details and the reaction. On the move, electric vehicle enthusiast, Raymond Lurie, shares his views on Ottawa's decision to backtrack on its zero-emission sales mandate.
Starting point is 00:02:05 The companies have dragged their feet, so giving them more time to drag their feet, how could that possibly speed up innovation? Prime Minister Mark Carney's announcement today is another shift away from a Trudeau-era policy, but it comes after backlash from the auto industry. They've got enough on their plate right now, so we're taking that off. Carney, offering automakers a reprieve as they grapple with Donald Trump's tariffs, and Washington backtracks on its own policies around battery-powered vehicles. By next year, 20% of all new passenger cars and SUV sold were supposed to be electric or hybrid. That's now on pause, while Ottawa reviews the mandate. Along with carbon pricing, this is the second federal climate policy Carney has weakened.
Starting point is 00:02:50 David Thornton, CBC News, Ottawa. A 12-year-old Alberta boy has been charged with the attempted murder of his seven-year-old brother. Lethbridge police, rather, say they received a call about a boy with stab wounds last week. He was airlifted to a pediatric hospital in Edmonton where he's now in stable condition. The 12-year-old initially said an unknown man had injured home, but police say the evidence shows the 12-year-old had repeatedly stabbed his younger brother. Israel Friday bombed a high-rise apartment building, in Gaza City, saying Hamas used it for its operations. And as Israel's military put pairs to take
Starting point is 00:03:28 control of the city, Hamas released a new video of two Israeli hostages held for nearly two years. Sasha Petrasek reports from Jerusalem. One volley fired at the apartment tower, damaging several floors, followed by another Israeli airstrike, bringing it down altogether. Israel says the tower was being used by Hamas. for cameras and infrastructure, Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shashani. There are many Hamas terrorists in Gaza City. They're using it as an operational center. The next step, he says, is a major operation to invade the city entirely, aimed at finishing
Starting point is 00:04:08 off Hamas for good. Still, there are risks for Israel, too. Some 20 living hostages could also be killed. As a reminder, Hamas released a video featuring two of them. It means that I'm not. One thing Guy Gilboa Delal is shown saying, me and eight of my fellow hostages will die here. Sasha Petrusik, CBC News, Jerusalem.
Starting point is 00:04:33 P-EI, RCMP, are investigating how a Charlottetown police officer surfered this weapon went off while in its holster Thursday morning. No one was hurt. RCMP Constable Gavin Moore said video shows the Charlottetown police officer hadn't touched it when it fired. The firearm is now being examined by the RCMP's armory. is your world this hour.
