Starting point is 00:00:39 ottawa the transportation safety board has been searching for parts of that plane one of them turned up in a front yard and it was given to police but then it disappeared the cbc's david fraser has more on the investigation on a quiet street in ottawa mary dalomore and craig parfet were enjoying an end of July night. Living near the Ottawa River and between two airports, they're used to hearing planes overhead, but then something sounded all. We heard it sputtering. That plane, a small recreational aircraft, crashed about 10 kilometers from their home, killing the pilot and injuring two others. Two days later, I saw this very shiny piping material. That's not something I put there. Craig came into the house with this pipe in his hand. Holy Mac. Parfet grew up around engines,
Starting point is 00:01:25 and they figured the part a camshaft must have come from the downed plane. They took pictures called the police who took the part away in an evidence bag. In mid-August, the Transportation Safety Board put out alerts looking for missing pieces of the engine. The TSB wants to take apart the plane in hopes of finding out what caused the engine to fail. The investigation is expected to be done by next March. David Fraser, CBC News, Ottawa. Air Canada flight attendants have overwhelmingly rejected the latest tentative
Starting point is 00:01:55 deal with their employer. Their union says 99% of members voted against it, but there will not be a new strike with both sides agreeing in advance. There would be no labor disruptions. Air Canada and the Canadian Union of public employees had also agreed that if the deal wasn't ratified, wage issues would go to mediation and then to arbitration if needed. More than 10,000 flight attendants went on a three-day strike last month, defying a federal order to return to work. The Federal Court of Appeal has given a flock of ostriches a reprave. Universal ostrich farms in British Columbia was ordered to call its 400-strong flock in December during an avian flu outbreak. It's been fighting back in the courts ever since, and Saturday it was granted an interim stay.
Starting point is 00:02:38 The farm argues the birds are now healthy and wants to take its case to the Supreme Court. Now to Sudan in its civil war, the number of internally displaced people have dramatically dropped now that some key cities have come back under the control of the army. For two years, they've been battling for control against the rebel rapid support forces. That fight's not over, and millions are still being impacted. But as Naba Mohiadin reports from the capital of Khartoum, some people are at last returning to their homes. According to the United Nations,
Starting point is 00:03:09 more than 1.3 million Sudanese have returned home since the army regained control of Central Sudan in January 2025. Omer also recently returned. I came back to Khatoum last month, like everyone I know, I found my house looted, but I've turned to solar energy so I can have power. Despite the high volume of returnees, many are still worried about security and reconstruction plans, as well as basic day-to-day needs. Sudanese blind minister, Camry, says the government hopes to address those concerns.
Starting point is 00:03:45 Can it turquise? The government's next priorities include reconstruction, strengthening the economy, preserving citizen security. Kartoum is a city in ruins and basic public infrastructure, such as roads, power and water plants largely destroyed. Naba Mahiddin for CBC News, Kertoum.
