Starting point is 00:00:26 The debater's 20th anniversary season, comedy, worth arguing about. From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Kate McGilfrey. Russia launched its largest aerial attack on Ukraine since the start of the war overnight, striking more than three dozen sites across the country, including the capital.
Starting point is 00:00:48 Officials say four people, including an infant, were killed, and Ukraine's main government building was hit. Anna Cunningham has more. Overnight sounds now familiar to Ukrainians. air raid sirens, the third of explosions and Ukraine's air defences. But these overnight attacks appear to have been overwhelming. The city's mayor Vitale Klitsko claims the government building was hit by a drone. Russia is yet to comment. Explosions were also heard in Ukraine's central city of Kremlinchuk and strikes on President Vladimir Zelensky's hometown of Krivi Ree.
Starting point is 00:01:24 In the southern city of Odessa, residential buildings were reportedly hit. was the scale of these latest attacks that neighbouring Poland as a precaution scrambled its own aircraft to defend eastern borders. These strikes, Kilman's Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected the idea of the use of foreign troops to secure borders in the event of a peace deal. Canada is one of 26 countries willing to provide troops for a so-called reassurance force. Anna Cunningham, CBC News, London. Meanwhile, in Washington, President Donald Trump was asked about his promise to put more sanctions on Russia if there were no peace talks with Ukraine. Are you ready to move to the second phase of sanctions against Russia or punishing?
Starting point is 00:02:08 Last month, Trump threatened more sanctions on Russia and countries that buy Russian oil of Moscow and Kiev did not sit down to negotiate. Trump spoke to reporters before boarding a helicopter on the lawn of the White House. He was on his way to New York to watch the U.S. open. And in Gaza. An Israeli strike on a building forces crowds to flee the streets for cover. Two high-rise buildings sheltering displaced Palestinians have been destroyed over the weekend with the Israeli military saying civilians were warned in advance
Starting point is 00:02:41 and that the buildings were being used by Hamas, something Hamas denies. Meanwhile, Israeli foreign minister, Gidon Tsar, says the war could end immediately. The war in Gaza can end tomorrow morning. With only two simple things, the return of our hostages, we still have 48 hostages kidnapped from their homes on October 7 in Gaza Strip. And with Hamas laying down its arms, Hamas has reiterated its position. They will only free the hostages if Israel agrees to end the war and withdraw from Gaza. Tsar made his statement after meeting with the Danish foreign minister, who called for an immediate end to Israel's offense.
Starting point is 00:03:25 in Gaza and the release of all hostages. He also expressed Denmark's concerns about Israeli expansion in the West Bank. In Seoul, South Korean President's Chief of Staff, Kang Hun Shik, says the government reached an agreement with the U.S. for the release of Korean workers, detained in an immigration raid in Georgia last week. The Korean government will send a plane to bring the workers back home. About 300 South Koreans were detained in.
Starting point is 00:03:55 in a raid on a Hyundai plant. Hyundai says a subcontractor had hired those who were detained. An investigation is underway in Latvia into the death of a Canadian soldier. Warrant Officer Nicholas Hull was reported missing last week. Officials say his body was found on Friday. Latvian authorities are supporting an investigation by military police. Hull was a vehicle technician based in Edmonton who had served for almost 20 years. And the body of a third hiker has been found near Meachin Creek Falls in the East Kootenais in B.C.
Starting point is 00:04:29 A week ago, the trio went over the falls while hiking in the area. The two women and one man succumbed to their injuries. All of them were Mexican citizens.
