From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Kate McGilvery. Russia launched its largest aerial attack on Ukraine since the start of the war overnight,
Starting point is 00:00:40 striking more than three dozen sites across the country, including the capital. Officials say four people were killed and Ukraine's main government building was hit, and a cunningham has more. Overnight sounds now familiar to Ukrainians, air raid sirens, the third of explosions and Ukraine's air defenses. But these overnight attacks appear to have been overwhelming. The city's mayor Vitale Clitchko claims the government building was hit by a drone. Russia is yet to comment.
Starting point is 00:01:11 Explosions were also heard in Ukraine's central city of Kremlinchuk and strikes on President Vladimir Zelensky's hometown of Krivi Rhee. In the southern city of Odessa, residential buildings were reportedly hit. Such was the scale of these latest attacks that neighboring Poland as a precaution scrambled its own aircraft to defend eastern borders. These strikes, Kelman's Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected the idea of the use of foreign troops to secure borders in the event of a peace deal. Canada is one of 26 countries willing to provide troops for a so-called reassurance force.

Meanwhile, in Washington, President Donald Trump was asked about his promised, but more sanctions on Russia if there were no peace talks with Ukraine. Are you ready to move to the second phase of sanctions against Russia or punishing? Last month, Trump threatened more sanctions on Russia and countries that buy Russian oil, if Moscow and Kiev, did not sit down to negotiate. In Gaza, an Israeli strike on a building forces crowds to flee the streets for cover. Two high-rise buildings sheltering displaced Palestinians were destroyed over this weekend,
Starting point is 00:02:25 with the Israeli military saying civilians were warned in advance and that the buildings were being used by Hamas, something Hamas denies. Meanwhile, Israeli Foreign Minister Gidon Tsar says the war in Gaza could end immediately. The war in Gaza can end tomorrow morning with only two simple things. The return of our hostages, we still have 48 hostages kidnapped from their homes on October 7, in Gaza Strip and with Hamas laying down its arms. Hamas has reiterated its position. They will only free the hostages if Israel agrees to end the war and withdraw from Gaza.
Starting point is 00:03:08 Saar made his statement after a meeting with the Danish foreign minister who called for an immediate end to Israel's offensive in Gaza and the release of all hostages. He also expressed Denmark's concerns about Israeli expansion in the West Bank. In Seoul, South Korean President's Chief of Staff, Kang Hoons-Sikh, says the government reached an agreement with the U.S. For the release of Korean workers detained in an immigration raid in Georgia last week, the Korean government will send a plane to bring the workers back home.
Starting point is 00:03:41 About 300 South Koreans were detained in a raid on a Hyundai plant. Hyundai says a subcontractor had hired those workers. A fire near the town of Lethbridge, Newfoundland, has prompted an air. evacuation order for residents in the Bayview part of town and forced the closure of Route 233, which is impassable in both directions. Premier John Hogan says evacuees can go to a nearby elementary school. The local fire department and firefighters with the province are responding. And in Nova Scotia, firefighters battling the Long Lake Fire in the Annapolis Valley have begun moving from the perimeter towards the center of the blaze. And they're likely to get some help from the
