Starting point is 00:00:26 The debater's 20th anniversary season, comedy, worth arguing about. From CBC News, it's the world this hour. I'm Joe Cummings. First to the latest developments in the Middle East. The Israeli military says it has carried out an airstrike today on Doha, targeting two members of the Hamas negotiating team. It's an attack, Catter's foreign ministry,
Starting point is 00:00:55 is calling a flagrant violation of international law. Sasha Petrissik reports What we are hearing is that this was an attack that was planned by Israel for some time. It was even codenamed Day of Judgment and that it was meant to take out the top negotiators who were set to meet in this one building in a neighborhood in Doha in Qatar. They were set to be discussing the proposal that the Americans have put forward to both Israel and to Hamas to try to end the war in Gaza. There was a lot of pressure on Hamas to agree to it.
Starting point is 00:01:32 This was where they were going to get together and decide whether, in fact, they were going to agree to it. And apparently this is where the attack happened. Now, we do not still have confirmation that these two men were killed. The suggestion is that they may have been, but there have also been reports out of Arab media in Doha that a number of people, quite a few in fact in the building did survive. Sasha Petrissik, CBC News, Jerusalem. At the same time, the Israeli military is calling for the evacuation of Gaza City. Most people reading leaflets dropped by Israeli planes.
Starting point is 00:02:11 They warn that a major military operation has been launched, and ground troops are on their way. About a million people live in and around Gaza City. Over the weekend, the IDF destroyed a number of high-rise buildings saying they house surveillance infrastructure being used by Hamas. Meanwhile, the organizers of an aid flotilla headed to Gaza, say one of their ships was hit overnight by a drone. The team that was on the boat, they spotted a drone approaching.
Starting point is 00:02:40 This drone flew above the boat, went to the front of the boat, to the bow of the boat, and dropped an explosive device that put the boat on fire. That's a member of the flotilla, Tiago Avia, The ship was docked in Tunisia and no one aboard was injured. Tunisian officials, however, are denying that a drone was involved. They say the fire could have been the result of engine problems. The Fultillo is carrying aid and pro-Palestinian activists, including Greta Toonberg.
Starting point is 00:03:10 Calling it a brutally savage attack on civilians, Ukrainian president Vladimir Zelensky says a Russian bomb strike on a small village has claimed at least 24 lives. Anna Cunningham has more. Footage shared by Ukraine's president appears to show the aftermath of an aerial bomb. CBC News has not been able to verify the footage. President Zelensky says this is a rural village of Yarova in Donetsk. It's some eight kilometres from the front line.
Starting point is 00:03:40 In his message, Zelensky urges his allies to act, saying a response is needed from the United States, a response is needed from Europe, a response is needed from the G20. This latest attack comes after Russia's heaviest bombardment of Ukraine since the start of the war. US President Donald Trump said Sunday he was not happy, repeating his threat to impose more sanctions on Russia, but he is yet to formally confirm he will follow through on his words.
